Not sure about personality but I absolutely believe a name can affect someone professionally, which is why I favor classic names.

I definitely think it can have an effect. LO's nickname is uncommon and what I would call a fun name. It's interesting to hear people's reactions and I notice that people and kids love to say it and always remember it. I would think that will affect the way she relates to people, hopefully in a good way!

I voted maybe. If it's a pretty out there name, I suppose it could. But most probably wouldn't affect them to the point of chaning their personality.

@Snowdrop: I agree there are names that could be viewed as resume dealbreakers. However, I am always pleasantly surprised when I see someone with what I consider an unfortunate, made up name in a decent position. At first glance I wouldn't take the person seriously just by their name. But, we all know there is so much more to people than their names. Good thing I am not a hiring manager.

I have a french name as im half french so most people I know dont know anyone else with my name. Because it is still a serious, real, name, I dont get any of the negative aspects you might with a made up name. I get loads of compliments about it and i think it helps people remember me. The only downside is pronunciation. I think the problem is more with stereotyped names rather than unusual.

I think so. I gave my LO an unconventional name and she's kinda living up to it personality wise. I do think names prime us to think about qualities related to the name which makes it easier to say "oh that name suits you. "

I think you can succeed despite a name but it would be harder, which I think can affect personality. And if someone sees your name and has expect ions based on it, it could affect your personality over the long term. Not something you couldn't move past but that doesn't mean it isn't affecting you.

Say I, with a very normal name that absolutely dates me because it skyrocketed in the early eighties and then went back to being very uncommon.

I agree with @arden that it isn't a dealbreaker but I also work in HR and see a lot of resumes so it is something I probably think more about than others. Our last name is pretty weird so we went with something very traditional for DS for that reason. There were a lot of non-traditional names I loved but would be so absurd with our last name. I think it really depends on the family. And I do think you grow into your name in a sense!!

I think it can make it more difficult to be taken seriously if you have a weird name (I think a girl named Diamonds or boy named Danger might have it a little rough when submitting resumes), but I think it is absolutely possible to succeed despite it.

We have a president named Barack Hussein Obama. When he first started running I thought his name might turn many Americans off, but he did it! A name is only one part of the package, I don't think it's a deal breaker by itself.

Do you believe what you name your kid will affect them for the rest of their lives? Even to the point that their personalities might be affected by it?

I have kind of a "weird" name... But all my life at least 5 times a year someone tells me how fitting my name is for me.
