we fed my LO formula within an hour after birth because she had low blood sugar. since then i have interchangeably fed her formula, pumped breast milk and breast milk directly from my breast. she has never had any confusion.
in the very begginnig breast feeding was hard inly because i had no milk yet so she didnt really get it, and struggled to latch on but once my milk came in she has had no problems with nipple confusion

I don't know any babies personally (friends/family/etc) who've had nipple confusion. Definitely nipple preference though. We gave one bottle of pumped milk every day since he was 1 month old and he easily switched back and forth. He was a good latched from the get go so I think that helped. I'm planning on introducing the bottle at around 1 month with baby #2 as well.

We started a bottle after a week or so. We had a good nursing relationship at that point. It was just one bottle at night and no paci.

I would say its also important to follow good bottle feeding techniques for a breast fed baby (from Kelly mom). Things like feeding in a more upright position, slowest flow nipple and stopping frequently for burps.

I'm more inclined to believe in nipple preference over nipple confusion. We introduced a pacifier at 5 weeks and a bottle at 6 weeks. It took a little doing but once we found the right ones, we didn't have any issue. I waited to establish a good nursing relationship but that can take longer or shorter than the "recommendation".

My milk didn't come in so we had to suppliment with formula. She did stop breastfeeding then, she only wanted the bottle. It took a whole big long process to get her back on the breast.

We waited, but it really did take Baby Y a month or so to perfect his latch. When we had to supplement for a couple of days, we did so with a dropper.

We introduced a bottle on day 3 and LO doesn't have any issues going from breast to bottle, or even a pacifier. As long as she gets fed she's happy.

I think there can be a problem if breastfeeding isn't going smoothly. If you want to be on the safe side I'd wait until your milk comes in and breastfeeding is well established. We introduced the bottle at 2 weeks and my husband would usually give her a bottle of pumped milk a day. She had a boob preference but we never really had a problem with her not taking the bottle if she needed to.

I have seen true nipple confusion maybe a handful of times. I have seen nipple preferences, but you can minimize that by using a slow flow nipple on the bottle and predominantly breastfeeding. All you need to do is introduce the bottle once a day for them to get the hang of it!

i've mostly heard it the other way around where baby prefers breast over bottle. if i were having a third child, i would introduce the bottle the first week! i don't really believe in nipple confusion.

olive STILL hates the bottle even though she gets a couple every single day!

I don't have first hand experience yet but my SIL just had her second. Her milk didn't come in till 4 days later and she was not pumping enough to feed him. So they had to supplement with formula already. She said he won't take her nipple now so she has to pump her breastmilk for him!

I would say it depends on the baby in my not a mom yet opinion??? :)

We waited until she was a month to introduce the bottle but she was using a pacifier from day 3. She's a champ with both nursing and her daily bottle that DH gives her. I think nipple confusion is fooey.

It depends on how the baby latches from the start.
Mavrick was a good latcher, and we gave him a paci at 2 days old. The first time around he was confused, but he got it... knew what was what.

In my unscientific opinion, I think it depends how your baby is latching to the breast. My LO had a pretty good latch from the beginning, so we tried giving her a bottle at 2 weeks and she did great going back and forth between the two. I've heard that if babies are having trouble latching, they might prefer the bottle because it's so much easier and then it's hard to get them to switch back.

Our problem was that she did such a good job with the bottle in the beginning, we didn't keep up with it. Now she's 4 months, in daycare, and hates the bottle. So once you start, keep up with it!

So, my breastfeeding class instructed us not to introduce a bottle or pacifier to baby until 4 weeks of age. I've had several friends who have supplemented with formula and had babies who both took bottles and nursed at the breast with formula and pumped breast milk. I really want to nurse as the benefits are undeniable but.......

My baby will be headed to daycare around 10 weeks of age, and my husband and I also want him to be able to bottle feed the baby so she can be soothed and bonded with her daddy and others at a young age. I don't want to set us up for failure though!

With all these recent bottle posts about the troubles Mrs. Jacks and Mrs Bee have had with transitioning their girls to the bottle I'm tempted to introduce one much earlier than 4 weeks out.

Thoughts,opinions, questions?!
