I always soak in soapy water for a few hours. Very rarely overnight. But I wouldn't mind if it was soaking overnight either. I just prefer to wash all of the dishes before I go to bed. I hate waking up to a sink full of dishes.

I always let dishes soak for an hour or two. Never overnight though.

We soak with hot water and soap. We then wash it afterwards, too.

We soak everything that's not getting washed immediately. We don't fill the sink, but just make sure there's water on top of plates and in bowls, etc to ensure nothing "permanently" adheres to it!

@Andrea: totally agree! But back then, we didn't have a dishwasher so it was trickier...

I always soak and then the dish frequently goes into the dishwasher anyway. The dishwasher will kill any germs.

We always soak, as well as leave dishes in the dishwasher for days until it's full and ready to run. I'm a big believer in super hot, soapy water. I use rubber gloves to wash dishes so I run the water as hot as possible.

I would have never thought about that. Like @tororojo: said, you are washing it after, so it would kill the bacteria.

I definitely soak hard-to-clean pots and pans...so if it's really a bacteria issue, I'm in trouble :) I think as long as you then use hot water and soap, it's no big deal!

Since you're washing the dishes afterward, I don't know why it would matter...wouldn't hot water and soap get any bacteria out?

I do. I mean you still clean them with soap and hot water after it soaks, so I don't see how that would be worse. I routinely leave dirty dishes in the dishwasher until it's full (those of course aren't soaking).

We are bad about cleaning things right away.

This was actually one of our first major disagreements as a couple, years and years ago.

If a pot/pan/bowl was hard to clean, I would often fill it up with water and then come back later and scrub it. Mrs. Bee preferred not to leave water like that, as it could lead to bacterial growth. (More recently, I just started doing them quickly so that soaking isn't really necessary).

Is it safe to soak dishes in water for a few hours/overnight? Or does it put the dishes at too much risk of bacterial growth,,,
