Most of the times I do and just use a nursing cover unless there are a bunch of men in the room. But if my in-laws are visiting for a week then I'll just go to another room. I'm sure it makes them feel uncomfortable. Plus, my LO likes to pull the cover and play with it so it's not always covered!

I always have a cover on no matter what, but it also depends on who. If it's DH's guy friends I prefer to go upstairs and nurse in the comfort of the nursery bc I don't feel comfortable... with women I just let them know I need to nurse, but I still like to use a cover.

oh, my goodness. I nursed LittleBebe on the couch today and FIL LITERALLY covered his eyes when he walked from the kitchen back to his chair (on the other side of me). DH looked at me with hands up "WTF, really?!" look on his face. I just rolled my eyes. Such a funny little man.

@highwire: Congrats. Love this commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgmbJso-2-o. I hope we can all find our comfort zone. But having a baby, I think we all lose some modesty.

@emahlee: I agree, I don't mind breastfeeding in front of anyone, but it makes a great excuse when I need a break!

There is so much I've had to let go of in terms of modesty with this while breastfeeding thing! I'm nursing in my own home however I can be comfortable and social. Nursed at a restaurant today (covered). Just trying to figure out how to fit this into my life. What a change!

yep, it's my house & I prefer to do it without a cover, but have used one in front of my FIL because of his comfort level with the whole thing (uh, not very high, in case you were wondering).

When LO was a new newborn I didn't, but once he was a little older- closer to 2 month I did. He didn't tolerate a cover ever really, so it was a matter of just being as discrete as I could. Hoping this next time around this facet is a little easier.

In the very early days I was more comfortable by myself, but that was mostly because we weren't good at it yet and my PP hormones were CA-RAY-ZEE so I would often cry trying to get her to latch (man I DON'T miss those days). Once we got the hang of things I hated missing out on all the action so I would plunk myself down on the couch and feed her wherever we were. If it was female family only I wouldn't cover, but if there were male family members I would use a cover. Now that she is 9 months she will NOT tolerate a cover for the most part, and she is way to distracted to nurse in a busy place so we have to find somehwere quite otherwise she pops off every time there is a sound and I spray milk over everything.

Yes, but it depends on who's around. I nurse openly (no cover) around my family and my female friends. When my in laws are over, I always leave the room and I don't mind; it gives me a welcomed break from them.

If I'm at home then I mostly just nurse him if I need to. I've used a cover (A and A blanket) a few times, but that was only because my dad and brothers were over. If it is my mom, MIL, female friends, etc. then I won't bother with a cover. One time a male friend came over while I was already nursing (no cover) and he just stayed in the part of the living room that was to my back until I was done. You couldn't really see anything with him already on, but I know he was just trying to be respectful. I wasn't too concerned because he's a doctor, has delivered babies, etc.

Yup I usually leave the room to get him latched on, and then use an A&A blanket to cover myself with and go back in with the company. I don't want to be hidden away! Not to mention, you really can't see anything with a cover over us.

@highwire: I got so sick of being banished to our bedroom or the nursery when family was here...The ILs come in a couple of weeks and I have gotten so comfortable w/BFing, I think I might just wear my Hooter Hider thingy and not be a prisoner trapped in 1 or 2 rooms of my own home!

I need to figure this out bc DH's dad comes tomorrow for Xmas. Part of me wants to be like this is natural and it's my house but I'm not there yet! He's also the conservative type so I guess I'll be doing all her feelings upstairs.

I do let people know before I start, but I'm pretty discreet anyway, even when I'm home alone so I don't worry about flashing too much

No. It's less of a modesty issue than comfort for DS. He doesn't nurse well when there are a lot of distractions and noise - I can't nurse him in front of the TV. I also like to make sure I can hear him swallow, which is hard to do when there is noise around.
