I buy shoes ahead several sizes and got them in half sizes until size 8. That first year he was walking he went from a 5W to a 7W so it was a lot of shoes! He literally went from a 5.5 to a 6 in 3 weeks! But he is a clutz and trips all the time and I wanted to make sure he had sturdy well fitting shoes (lots of feet, ankle, and knee problems in the family). Since turning size 7 at 2 years he's slowed way down and his 7s still fit at 29 months. He's very fast and stable as a runner now so I will be fine with him rocking full sizes after he hits the 8s, but I won't expect him to until he's over 3.

We snag Stride Rites on clearance and use their rewards and ask for them for birthdays and Christmas so I have never paid over $20-25 bucks for a pair of shoes and often get them for $10-15. Luckily we have DS2 to wear the hand me downs and their resale value on eBay or local mom groups is pretty decent.

I just feel like the crazy foot growth thing is a super short phase and I hate wearing shoes that are too loose so I just roll with it.

My sons feet has periods of growing fast and then slow. Personally, I buy shoes that are true to size and get him resized every 3 months. Shoes are more than just an article of clothing, but provide body support. I think they should fit right.

The other things to consider is that even if he measured one thing, some brands run big or small and it can be the difference of close to a full size. Honestly, I'd try a handful of options on and pick whatever fits the best. At that age we were in soft soles still though so I felt a bit better going a little big, it wasn't as clunky as it would have been if I bought sneakers big.

@travellingbee: Debated this myself (DS is 14 months) since we are finally in the "walking everywhere" stage. He wears a 4, and the one pair of 5s I ordered (Toms) are waaaaaay too big. So I guess we will stick to 4s! But I know what you mean. He wore 3s for a hot minute and I have TWO pair of expensive, barely worn, Freshly Picked moccasins and it kills me. Haha.

Not for my son, his feet grow so slowly that he trashes his shoes before he outgrows them (he's been in the same size for more than a year). For my daughter I will size up. Her feet seem to grow very fast (4 sizes in the last 12 months).

@travellingbee: a lot of the shoe companies don't make half sizes though, so then you have to buy exactly what fits or a full size. Which I've gotten wrong going both ways. And then some run small anyway. I'm very tired of kid sizing!

I will buy a half size up from whatever they measure usually- so if stride rite says she is a 4, I'd buy the 4.5. Going up a full size that young seems tough. But I also feel like I get it wrong a lot- either my older one outgrows it right away or they are too big for so long. She currently has one pair of shoes that seem to fit right, her snow boots.

@Portboston: @Mrs. Turtle: my 3.5 year old is just outgrowing her size 8 shoes!! Both my kids have little feet, which they did not get from me.

I size up, but I make sure DD can walk well in the shoes too. She has chubby feet and I think that helps somehow when wearing longer shoes.

@travellingbee: I just got a few pairs of nice stride rites for each kid on the kidizen app. They're used, but hardly, and they were about $8- $12 each. Made me feel better about buying size 4.5. I too was worried about tripping if I went to 5's too soon.

This has been hard for us because LO's feet will grow a full size overnight - and then they won't grow for a year.

I had my MIL get her some shoes a size up because I was sure she would outgrow her current size - and she didn't get to wear them that season and my MIL was pretty disappointed.

But of course, just as I resolved to only get shoes that fit now, it seems she's outgrowing them all again!

My kids seem to stay in the same shoes awhile so I tend to stick fairly close the their true size. The only times I haven't is buying Old Navy jellies. Mostly because I'm worried that any space in the shoe will rub blisters!
