There have been times that I bought something for someone because I thought they'd love it only to have them buy it for themselves before their birthday/Christmas. I've also forgotten where I hid gifts only to find them after I bought something else. So now I have a google doc called Gifts where I type in my ideas as they come. Then when it comes time to buy, I just pick off the list.
