It depends on the person's economic situation (if I know it). If I know they can't afford a lot of things, then I will give them something practical. But if they are more well off, then I won't worry about giving them something more fun because I know they won't be hurting for the practical thing if I give them something fun. I hope that doesn't sound bad but that is my logic.

For showers I gift based on what they registered for. But, when I'm visiting a baby for the first time, I usually get more fun gifts. I'm actually heading out to meet our newest little cousin and I got her the most adorable sweater dress, beanie, peacoat, and little red shoes!

I usually lag on registry shopping so I'll buy something practical....usually whatever is left! And I'll try to find something unique or personalized on Etsy as well.

I try to do a little of both, something fun and something useful. My ideas of fun and useful will probably adjust more once motherhood hits and I gain another perspective.

Before I had kids, I never knew what practical stuff they would need besides diapers. I also knew that babies don't need a lot of clothing because they grow out of them so quickly. I like knitting baby hats so that's what I gifted a lot. Now with kids, I still prefer to make something if I have time. Otherwise, I'll tend to get something more on the practical side.

If I live nearby, I'm more apt to buy practical stuff (diaper bag stuffed with emergency supplies, for instance - the mom told me which diaper bag she wanted.) If I'm halfway across the country/globe, or it's a second+ child, definitely fun stuff. I'm never sure how people would react to a book (unless it's for the baby), I don't know what they have/what others are getting them... And clothes/baby books are safe.

I do both! When the announce, if it's a friend or close relative, I'll send something cute like an outfit or something I just can't resist at the store.

When they have their shower, It depends on how close we are but it's usually something practical. For best friends, I'll give them their pack n' play or another must-have item on their list that is around $150. For friends/family, I'll give them their baby swing or bouncer and maybe a little something extra.

@Rubies: HAHA. hilarious. You never know! I know a mom who ALWAYS dressed her newborn in street clothes.. her little man always has shoes on too.
I, on the other hand, never dressed my LO up the first couple months of her life.

Before I had LO I would gift other moms with impractical things like a white satin newborn dress with frills - it was damn cute but now I realize the baby probably never wore it. Now that I'm a mom, I buy practical gifts OR toys that are age appropriate and I always include a gift receipt.

@Mrs. Bee: the two books and miracle blanket sound like an awesome idea to me, too! Very amazon-able. The jj cole package is very babies-r-us-able, which is why I do it often. One stop shopping, wooha!

For Christmas and Birthday's I buy fun gifts. Usually the ones that parents wouldn't buy, i.e. loud and messy gifts (I'm aware that my payback is a'coming). But for events like baby showers I always buy practical gifts for baby and the parents.

My sister bought it for us. Cutest little freaking outfit EVER. Just kinda sad that she spent the money on an outfit he'll probably wear once.

I've always done more "fun" gifts, but now that I'm experiencing it for myself I'm gonna start giving more practical stuff.

As cute as little 0-3 month clothes are, I would MUCH rather receive something we need and can use for a while than an outfit the little guy will likely only wear once.

(Not that I'm not grateful for the "fun" stuff, I would just appreciate stuff we need more - babies are expensive! lol)

I like to gift practical items or things I didn't think of at first but found very useful later on! I like your tactic of giving a fun gift to a second time mom... I guess you would probably have all the practical stuff you need!

One of my favorite gifts to give is the jj cole diaper caddy filled with a pack of newborn diapers, a container of wipes, and the little drawer filled with things like triple paste, mylicon, vaseline, infant tylenol, and aquaphor. So I guess that's pretty practical.

I also love to give Red Sox / Patriots / Celtics / BC gear to people who used to live in Boston but don't anymore!

Two of my friends recently had babies, For my friend who had a daughter (she already has a son), I gave some fun girly things like hello kitty baby legs, trumpette mary jane socks, and a pink hat + booties.

for my other friend who's a first time mom, i gave her more practical gifts like the happiest baby on the block dvd, a copy of healthy sleep habits, happy child, and a miracle blanket.

i probably gifted different things since second time moms are different than first time moms, and i'm more likely to gift fun stuff for second time moms. but as a general rule... do you gift fun or practical?
