Absolutely! We have also been lucky to receive several hand me downs from my cousin's baby! We've barely had to buy any clothes, mostly stuff I think is cute and want. I bought her 3 pairs of shorts and 2 pairs of pants for $16 at consignment the other week, such a steal! Although when my in-laws found out I buy her second hand clothing they looked appalled and said "aren't you worried about contamination?" hahahaha

I do but I also pay attention to sales and buy new. I agree with other pp that sales on new clothing is sometimes as cheap or cheaper than used. We have 2 consignment shops near where I live. One is kind of more upscale and the other is cheaper brands and I've gotten things at both places. I have 3 boys and share clothing with my nephew too so I'm all about saving money where I can. My 4 year old is really hard on his clothing especially pants. I think it is finally going to stay warm enough for shorts thankfully because he has holes in all of the knees of his pants.

@mamaof2: I just bought a pair of shorts for $1.25 and shirts for $2.25 at Target. Can't beat that. Perfect stuff for daycare. If it gets ruined I don't mind.

I sell at a consignment shop a few blocks away. I get T clothes with the credit. Most of our used clothes are hand me downs or loans. I've started shopping more carefully and only what I really love/need for new.

@avivoca: I'm sorry. When I set up the group, I worked with the Buy Nothing people to set up very specific boundaries (only people in one zip code, is what we used). They really do want to keep it hyper local, so that means I have to turn away people sometimes. The goal is to foster community and friendships among your closest neighbors, so that is why they set it up that way. I'm sorry she had a not-so-nice attitude with you, though! That's not okay.

@DillonLion: I think I'll look into it once I have this baby. I understand wanting to be hyper-local, but the admin's attitude was more along the lines of "poor(er) people, stay out).

@DillonLion: I just tried to join the Buy Nothing group for my city, but my address falls outside of the boundaries of the group (interestingly, it's limited to three of the most affluent neighborhoods in our city). They said I could start my own group because they wanted to keep it hyperlocal.

I buy a mix of used and new. When DS was a baby it was easy to get lots of used clothes, though a lot were in "play" condition. As he gets bigger the selection gets slimmer and slimmer. He's 2.5 now, and if I get clothes for him at a consignment sale, they're typically not favorites of mine, but work great as backup clothes for daycare.

We are expecting a baby girl in August, and I was able to get her tons of consignment stuff, lots I really liked. But I expect that as she gets bigger we'll have less luck finding stuff I like, just like DS.

Generally I find it a whole lot simpler just to shop at places like ON, Gymboree, and Carters though. I usually shop once per season where I stock up on what he needs for months at a time. I can capitalize on the sales and coupons and it's super convenient. Buying used can be fun, but it's less convenient for me, and a lot more time consuming. Also, he absolutely destroys clothes at daycare. IDK what they do, if it's markers or paint or food, or what. But eventually his clothes come home with some sort of stain that I just can't get out, no matter what I do to it. Which is also why I don't generally do high end clothes for him, even used. I don't want to be stressed out that something I was planning on selling has now been ruined.

We get lots of good quality hand-me-downs from cousins so we are grateful for that. If I shop, I like to buy new and shop during sales or clearance events at local stores. I find that the deals are so much better and people still need income from these jobs anyway. I am trying to buy less through Amazon too and buy it at the local stores instead.

@Meowkers: I agree there is some nasty stuff in typical low-end resale shops, but you'd be surprised at the amount of new things that end up getting consigned in nicer places. When I buy "used" clothing, it is pretty much exclusively new with tags....people get gifts in the wrong size/color/season, kids refuse to wear the end of season deals their moms bought last year that can no longer be returned....or people just can't be bothered. I wash my kids new clothes before my LO's wear them anyhow, since chances are a clothing factory is a thousand times filthier than someone's attic or basement!

I'm a pretty talented sale shopper, and tend to score amazing prices on new clothes from places like Tea or Baby Gap...but I'll buy new or like new premium brands from resale shops or sites if the prices are low enough. Generally this happens when items are miss-classified and priced as a lower value item or brand, or when it's out of season. I bought new with tags infant patagonia jacket for $12 recently this way!

Yep, I buy lots of secondhand higher end brands like Tea and Boden. It's awesome because i can typically resell and recoup almost all of what I paid. It's like renting! :)

No, we mostly get a combo of hand-me-downs, clothing from grandmas and shop super sales at Carter's/Old Navy. As far as I know, we don't have any good consignment stores around here besides Goodwill and I haven't found anything I like there. I have a feeling I am looking in the wrong places.

Our wardrobes for ourselves and LO are about 80% secondhand (bought on consignment or hand-me-downs) and 20% on sale from an inexpensive store if we are looking for a specific piece of clothing.

I did when she was a baby because it was much easier to find like-new things at that point. These days, so many of the things I buy used end up being more worn out than I'd prefer, so I don't do it as much. I tend to buy online though, and it's harder to gauge how worn things are. I need to find a consignment store so I can check out things in person.
