Yup. I buy walmart brand for almost everything. I find it usually tastes the same! There are a few things I refuse to buy not name brand just because I've tried before and it tastes like crap!

I find that Great Value usually has less "unknown" ingredients in it versus brand name. Surprising.

I do. In general, there is way less selection here than in the US, for example, you might have 3 brands if milk instead if 10. I try to buy as much organic as possible and there are only a handful of organic brands. However, my local grocery store makes tons of store brand organics, so I buy those. Sometimes the store brand organic is the only organic of a particular type of product like milk or butter.

@locavore_mama: @mrs. bird: lol, pretty sure I cannot be converted on the Heinz (or if I were, I don't know that I could admit it out loud). Eating something other than Heinz is considered sacrilege in our family ;)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: ooooo, yes! i forgot about peanut butter! i want to like natural PB... but i don't, it just doesn't do anything for me, i LOVE me some jif! SO was supposed to buy PB recently & bought store brand, it was so gross, i made him eat it and bought my own jar of jif ;)

@Mae: trader joe's ketchup is the best!! i love their brand of almost everything!

i do for some things and not for others. often i can get brand name for much less than the generic when i shop sales with coupon match ups, but if i need something right then and neither is on sale, i often go with the generic. almost all of our medicine cabinet is generic, again unless i get it for next to nothing with coupons. i do not buy generic chocolate chips, bread, soda, cheerios, pie crust dough, or frozen veggies, but pretty much all other foods i'm open to.

@Corduroy: Yes! This is so true!!

We have a mix at our house. I used to buy the store brand more frequently (Publix is great quality) but after starting to use coupons a few years back I found that sales+coupons were cheaper than the store brand. So, when I have a sale and coupon it's brand name, when I don't it's Publix for us.

@Mae: This is often the case for us, too, but there are a few things I have noticed a huge difference in with store vs. brand names. One is marshmallows-we usually buy brand name, because I think the other ones taste stale. Another is brown sugar-I don't think off-brand brown sugar packs as well or incorporates as well when baking. But for flour and regular sugar, I'm store brand all the way.

It's a mix over here, I can't give up on my Heintz ketchup or Progresso soup. But I've switched mostly everything else to store brands, I can't tell the difference and neither can my family. I figure this helps balance out our free range meat/chicken.

We shop at trader joes so almost everything is "store brand." At traditional grocery stores I am a bit choosier about what we buy store brand vs. brand. If it is an ingredient-type item usually store brand. If it is a finished product (like, chips) I usually buy brand name.

I usually at least try the generic.

Professionally, I've developed lots of products that are exactly the same as the name brand. The give away is usually the packaging. If the packaging is the same size and shape as the name brand product is usually produced by the same company (although not necessarily the same formula or quality). Sometimes the store brands even have higher standards than the name brands (I'm looking at you Costco).

It depends on the store. Wegman's for sure when we would shop there when we lived in DC! Also if we're at Whole Foods we buy their brand. We mostly have our groceries delivered via Fresh Direct, which we order online, and they don't really have their own brand except for things like dried fruit and nuts.
