We ended up going to visit my family in the Caribbean in summer 2011. It turned out to be the weekend that Hurricane Irene hit the Northeast, and we couldn't get back on time. We had trip insurance and got reimbursed for a lot of the additional expenses we incurred to get back home. I almost always buy it for international trips anywhere and I especially do now with LO. Some locations I would consider it though. My ILs went to Africa a few years back and it was the only way FIL would agree to the trip. They bought some crazy ass insurance but didnt use it. Me and my BFF went to Paris and they lost our luggage - I had trip insurance and she didn't =( Anyway they gave me $150 to spend on toiletries and clothes - my luggage showed up on Day 2. DH, on the other hand, has had to file a number of claims and it's a good thing he had insurance or he would have been out several thousands of dollars by now. My favourite is him getting bitten by a monkey in China and requiring rabies shots for the next four weeks. They were cheap in mainland China (about $5/shot), more expensive in Hong Kong ($125) and astronomical when he got to the US ($1500/shot)! We've used it once (LO had a fever of 105 the morning of our flight). I'm still sort of annoyed about that experience, because the insurance company messed up and only covered LO (not DH, who stayed home with her, and not my change fees since I had to switch flights). We had bad weather & had to arrange new travel plans mid way through to get to our 2nd destination when we learned the morning of that island ferry was cancelled all day & likely the next. Too many variables and things that can go wrong Including the time our beach house (in a lovely safe area) was broken into and things were stolen. Luckily we were able to buy it after the trip was booked and we ended up using it. For big vacations I will absolutely buy it again. We were newbies and didn't want to risk anything. We didn't have to file a claim. A friend of mine bought it for our final Spring Break trip. When the Brazilian airport all of a sudden was starting to lock down and we still hadn't boarded our flight back to the States we all wish we had it then. There was a strike in Tahiti, and the airport closed down for a few days so we couldn't leave. We would have lost so much money had we not had the insurance. It ended up being right at the height of "Swine flu" in Mexico when there were travel advisories and Mexican schools were closed.
