If it's within budget then I like to. DH is more likely to dismiss something if he doesn't see the value in it though

@PinkElephant: It didn't make sense to get him a second ride on car. I think if he had decided he wanted a bicycle, we would have gone for it, because I do believe the season right now is about the magic.

Yes. I don't really see a point in getting them something they don't want or like since I assume it wouldn't get much use.

@honeybear: that's a good idea. Last year I made the girls gorgeous Pinterest-worthy ribbon pompoms/streamers for their scooters, and as you predicted, they totally don't care.

@PinkElephant: For the scooter thing, I'd offer to help her make a unique decoration, probably using stuff in our craft bin. Purple paperboard should make a pretty nice horse head/silhouette, and then you could add something the plastic thing doesn't come with, like ribbon tassels or glued-on sequins or stickers. By the time it all falls off or gets ruined, she'll probably either be over it or enthusiastic enough to make new decorations largely by herself.

@Mamaof2: 🙂 Believe me, I'm right with you - not really sure which path I would take. I 100% agree with the lesson - then the softie in me caves and just wants to delight her! I'm hoping there is still time for both kids to latch into a "main gift" idea I'm also excited about.....time to start Brainstorming and planting seeds.

@PinkElephant: if she gets upset that she didn't get something it will either be
1. a lesson in you don't get everything you want
2. I will buy her one for her bday in March

yes, I know, 2 totally opposite responses - not sure which I will do - guess it will depend on her reaction.

I will add since then she has been talking about another toy non stop so I think that's more on her radar now anyway - I'll report back after Xmas

@Truvy: my kids almost never watch live tv at home (we DVR everything) and I dread this problem. When we are visiting family and see commercials for toys, it is lights out - they are so easily impressed!

@erinbaderin: I agree - it's fun to get things you don't "need" - I remember getting a perfume set and a Barbie I asked for in maybe 3rd-4thgrade and feeling really special. It's why I may cave to 1 or 2 "dumb" gifts if it really will please my kids.

For what it's worth, DH and I try to be good about making sure my girls realize they are lucky, that they have a lot, and that they must respect what they have (cleaning up, playing nicely with it). We also try to move toys along that we don't need - duplicates, things we don't love, etc. I'm happy to overindulge them a little, but dont want them to be and act spoiled, if that makes sense.

.@2PeasinaPod: love this toothbrush request!

@looch: good for you for saying no! I've tried to kindly shoot down the things that I feel are duplicate, but it has been difficult because they are mostly small things, like dolls or dresses. I actually wish my girls wanted one big thing so I could just buy it and be done!

@Alivoo01: this had been my method in previous years, but I made the mistake of telling my four year old when she asked to buy something randomly that if she still liked a toy art Christmas time, we could tell a relative or ask Santa, she didn't forget- oops.

@Mamaof2: totally on the hatchimal. I think my two and a half year old would LOVE one....for about five minutes. I'm trying not to let her know they exist. Do you think there's a chance your LO will be really disappointed, though? If so, how will you handle it? That's the part that worries me, I'll feel stingy if DD gets genuinely upset over a stupid $30 toy I could have given her
.@fancyfunction: same, I've tried to seep aside the notion of more dress up clothes/dolls, but if they persist, I might back down and try to purge their current collection.

@honeybear: ha! the scooter accessory is downright stupid, IMO. She's just soooo enthralled, but I'm not sure it's last. And if she gets one, you know the 4 year old will want one as well, and then I've just spent $50 on tricking out scooters...
..@birdofafeather: that's really cute! I'd be ok with train tracks, too - maybe they'll refresh interest in what you already have!

He usually only asks for one thing, so yes. So far we have. This year, I'm actually trying to get him to ask Santa for more. He wanted a spinbrush toothbrush at Target, and I told him maybe Santa would bring it. That's the only thing he's asking for now. Cracks me up!

The one extravagant thing he did ask my inlaws for was a trampoline. I vetoed it right away and told him that we don't have room for a trampoline and Grandma and Pop-pop aren't made of money! Haha...he seemed disappointed, but moved on pretty quickly to something smaller and much more manageable.

Last year, my son wanted one thing. It was expensive, so I said to him that we would ask Santa about it, but that it would be the only thing that he got that year. He agreed and did very well with it.

This year, he asked for something that is quite similar to what we bought him last year and it is in the same price range, but I have already told him that Santa can not bring that this year and we are not able to get it for him either.

@PinkElephant: no. DD asked for a hatchimal and beside the fact that they were $50 I imagined she would get bored of it very quickly. So I didn't bother.

So far, yes, if it is reasonable. Maybe later when they want an expensive pair of shoes or something like that, it may be the only gift. I literally did not buy a single toy for my older LO this past year (his birthday is close to the holidays, and he received a few random "just because" family gifts throughout the year), so I feel like we can splurge a little on a birthday or Christmas gift.

My kids are almost 3 and 8 months so so far is hasn't been a concern - this is the first year B has understood how it works and he asked for trains and a Ryder from Paw Patrol, so we got him both those things. As they grow up I'll have to see how it goes but I think I'll try to fill their wishes to the best of my ability. I think that's what Christmas is for!

Yes, not every single thing but a good bit of the things. I was pretty spoiled on Christmas day when I was growing up and I remember it being sooooo awesome. I want DD to feel the same. Luckily for now she isn't asking for anything too expensive. Her list for Santa has been and remains: doc's hospital, tsumtsum's, duck game.....

My son (6) is getting the one item he indicated that he'd like this year, but I approve of it (Legos), and I found it on sale at a price that fit the budget (the original price was quite a bit higher than what I wanted to spend and I wanted room to buy him some books that aren't at the library too).

I wouldn't buy him a toy I thought was silly. I'm quite transparent with him about my thoughts on stuff like that. (For the record, I'd likely have bought him one of the gifts listed above--bike, building toys, musical instruments, dollhouse, dolls--except for the ones in the original post, because we don't need duplicates and I'd never heard of the scooter accessories, but they don't pass my "silly" test.) We don't do Santa.

If it is within reason then yes I'll buy it. The reaction of getting just what he asked for will be worth it.

DS is 3.5 and keeps telling me different items that he is going to ask Santa for. I've been keeping a list for when I shop. Not that he will get it all, but I want at least a couple of things that he asked for to show up.

I keep reminding him that Santa won't bring everything he asks for, maybe 1 or 2 of them and we will see on Christmas. He seemed satisfied with this.

i have so far, but there's nothing outlandish. last year, DD1 (then almost 3) insisted baby sister (then 2 months) wanted an astronaut.... so i found a little people astronaut figure. random, but she was excited for sister.

this year, she's almost 4 and has said that she's gonna ask santa for more train tracks.... which she asked for last year (and received from santa!) and she barely uses.... but it's not too much and i like playing trains and she's the oldest, so i figure it's not a bad buy.

Last year we did, since she saw a few toys at Target (Frozen microphone, B. Toys Dog Guitar) that we knew she would play with. This year my 4 year old has mostly asked for things she has seen on TV commercials, and I don't think she would actually even like them, or she is too young. She wants the Barbie camper van, which at $90 I think is too much money for what it is, but I do think she would like a dollhouse so we are getting her the Barbie Dreamhouse which I think is worth the price. For a lesser priced item, $30 like you said, I probably would.

Yes, so far we have. They ask for one thing every year and we try to make it happen. LO 1 wants a bike and LO 2 wants some new magnetic tiles this year.

I may not have phrased the title very eloquently, but what I'm wondering is if you will, within reason, buy your kids anything they ask for at the holidays, regardless of whether or not you think it's silly, pointless, they'll be over it in a week, etc.? If you do buy these things, are they from you, or Santa?

My DDs are over the moon about some gift ideas that I, quite frankly, think are pretty dumb. One wants a "bouncy doggie" (like a Rody, which we have already); the other really wants a purple pony Scootaheadz for her scooter (which I think is overpriced and limited in its use). Both are around $30 (won't totally break the bank, but just pricey enough for me to feel like it's wasteful if they are short-lived), so I'll probably just get them for them, most likely from Santa to discourage the idea that these gifts were something mommy wanted them to have (and there fore keep asking me for!)
