My bff's dad will as always be Dr. Green, but I have transitioned other adults to Ms. or Mr. First name. My FIL insists on his first name only and my MIL is Mrs. Step dad's last name. Eventhough MIL recently divorced (it was bitter) she hasn't told me to call her something else.

It depends on the relationship I have with the "adult"-- close friends' parents, I call by their first names. Teachers I respected (and kind of expect that), I call by their last names. Teachers I became friendly with, their first names.

I still call my parents' friends Mr. and Mrs. Soandso. Old habits. Their kids still call my parents Mr. and Mrs. too. Funny enough, our next door neighbor (who we grew up next to)'s son sometimes calls my dad by his first name. His father is like, I call him Mr. W and you get to call him H??

I do, unless instructed otherwise.

My husband refuses to call my mom by her name, so he first wanted to call her mom, since his own mother has a different word in their language, but none of the other in-laws call her mom, so I thought that was weird. So now he calls her "Nana" which is what all the grandkids call her. But basically he avoids saying her name at all.

I used Auntie and Uncle when I was younger for my parent's friends and teachers were Mrs or Mr. Soandso. I don't think I would use those terms anymore but I also wouldn't use their first names....

Haha, I always try to avoid calling my MIL by name, but I have no problem calling my FIL by name (although we work together so I have to!). They always sign cards "mom and dad," but there's no way I'm calling them that!

*ETA* I often call close friends' parents mom and dad! Have done that since high school, though.

This came up in another discussion, and I thought it might be interesting as a separate thread!

It has been hard for me to make the transition to first names! But now that I'm getting old myself, it feels ridiculous to keep calling my old piano teacher Mrs. Soandso.

For a while I did what I did with my MIL, which was completely avoid any names at all for years at a time. Finally I caved and started using her first name. Still feels weird, but I'm glad I finally made the switch. At least, for some of my teachers and parents' friends. :)

Do you call your old teachers and parents' friends Mr/Mrs. SoandSo, or have you made the switch to using their first names?
