I love matchy names. My brother and I have matchy names, although my parents didn't do it on purpose. My mom had a name picked out for me, and my Grandmother wanted to name me after her favorite soaps star, and we didn't have that common name in the family and my mom said okay. I actually pointed out it matches my brother's name! For us, all our children will start with same letter, bonus if it flows well together. Maya is my daughter, and I joke a future sister will be Mia. Maya Mia!

@californiadreams: lol at not wanting him to be called Bill. We have a William nn Will and that was one of my fears too. I would think he would probably either go by Liam or William if that's what you always call him. I mean I can see going from Billy to Bill but it's pretty different to go from Liam to Bill! And no one calls ours Bill or Billy. A couple older people have asked here and there and most responses are that it's old fashioned and good we are not using it.

@californiadreams: I don't think they are too similar at all. And I really like Liam and William b

As for popularity, I was really worried about that too- we talked for months about baby 2's name. Finally we went with the name we liked best even though it was #9 most popular name in our state in 2014. Hopefully she doesn't hate it or end up having to go by her initial!

@ShootingStar: i see what you mean about one name being more common than the other. That doesn't bother me so much. The extreme popularity of Liam does, but i think i could get over it. The same letter doesn't bother me as much either, it is more of that in combo with the 2 syllables and both having an "ee" sound in them made me feel they might be too matchy.

@MamaCate: @skipra: I have definitely thought about using William with Liam as a nick name. And even before Liam came as an option, DH and I both agreed that we like William as a name...but i am afraid of DS2 deciding to use Bill as a nickname in the future which we really don't like! And if I do go with William just so i can nickname him Liam, i feel like it is a bit silly and i should go with Liam if that's what we want.....but i haven't ruled it out because i do like William quite a bit.

@hellocupcake: that's so interesting!

Same first letter is OK, as long as the rest of the name can't be considered a rhyme.

My mom gave my sister and I both D names: Desiree and Dayle. When our youngest sister was born, she actively looked for a non top 100 name that started with a D she liked, but couldn't find one she liked. She ended up choosing one of that most popular names that year instead, lol. Nicole.

@hellocupcake: My family tree has the same thing! The situation is a bit different though. My great (great?)grandparents had a baby named Katherine. She passed away in infancy, and they liked the name so much they named a later daughter Catherine.

@wrkbrk: She's Cinthia with an I, her sister is Cynthia with a y. They have different dads (don't know if that matters), but the mom couldn't think of a name she liked better than Cynthia so she named her second daughter the same. I've never met her mom but I know my friend said its never bothered her and it's sort of become a quirk that her and her sister can share.

Um, yeah, it was sort of unintentional but my entire family sort of rhymes. Meaning DH, me, DS1, and DS1. All of our names end in -an or -on and are 2 syllables. To be fair, I'd be mixing up everyone's name regardless.

@californiadreams: I think those go well together without being too matchy but obviously there is a judgement call there! Have you considered William nn Liam for the new baby? That way they have different initials and the flexibility of being more different if needed in the future if you get tired of the matching letters?

We have 2 boys and their names are 3 letter 1 syllable names. Their first names aren't very common and both boys have 2 middle names. We'd like to keep that trend if we have a third boy in July.

I like the names you have chosen together.

@californiadreams: DS is Liam, and Louis/Louie was on our boy name list for #2. #2 is a girl, and her name will most likely be Lucy.

We hesitated a bit about the Ls but I have so many friends and family whose children share a first initial, I don't think anyone will bat an eye. We didn't go searching for "matchy" names, just happened to like another L name the best.

I actually have a rule that none of my kids names can start with the same letter. I grew up with 4 J's and then my sister and I are an S and an R and it just felt weird.

I kinda feel they're matchy, and Liam is too popular for my taste.

I personally don't think I would use two names with the same letter. But the names you've chosen actually seem pretty different to me. One is French, the other Irish. I do really like your second name, and if it's a name you like, then don't let the shared first letter stop you.

Growing up I didn't have a matchy name with my brother, but my mom and I share first names that start with K/C sound (and they're 2 syllables) and my brother and dad both have one syllable names that start with M, and we did occasionally get comments on the matchy-ness. So be prepared that you will probably gets comments over the years as well.

@californiadreams: Those don't sound too matchy. What's funny with the naming structure we went with our kids was personal preference. We like to say that DH named DS #1 while I named DS #2. We both decided on the names, but since DS #1 has a family name of DH's, going with his choice made sense and was right in the moment.

With DS #2, my picks had a little more weight on them this time around. I spent months mulling over names and polling my family members for significant names. We named DS #2 with the same name as my maternal uncle and middle name that's prevalent on both maternal and paternal sides of my family.
