I really don't think there's any good reason to NOT clean up after your kids - I'm not saying spotless, but if they make a huge mess there's no excuse for not doing your best to clean up at least the bigger pieces. We also used these table covers for a long time. Now that she's 2.5 we don't have to use them but they were awesome when she was younger and would make a mess while eating. I would just sweep everything onto it and fold it up to toss.
