I was one of those who said they'd never bedshare....yep, I've had to eat my words! (I always planned on co-sleeping with a bassinet next to the bed).

He sleeps better and longer....and I don't even have to get up (or really even stay awake) to nurse him so its a win-win.

We take naps together too. It's pretty much my most favourite part of my day.

Yes, and I swore I would NEVER do it. But here I am with LO in bed every night. She refused her bassinet early on and it was the only way to calm her down and get her to sleep. Hopefully e can transition her into her crib, in her own room eventually. I don't even want to say "soon" since I kno it's not going to happen. Plus DH thinks its too soon to have her sleep by herself, although he sleeps on the couch.

We started co-sleeping at 6 months old when my son needed more food and wanted it in the middle of the night. I worked full time and I just couldn't get up 3 times a night to nurse him. He still sleeps there with us at 17 months old.

@TurtleDoves: Have you considered a co-sleeper? It allows you to get many of the benefits (closeness, easy breastfeeding at night, etc) but keeps you from rolling onto the baby or anything like that.

Wonder Baby sleeps in her crib in our room (at almost 8 months). Honestly, she'd have be in her own room by 3 months if she had one! She used to sneak into bed after her morning feed (or on bad nights), to help us all get a bit more sleep. But that stopped helping, so now she sleeps on her own (and I sleep a lot better).

I wasn't sure how to answer...We did a family bed for the first 4 months- awesome. Then we did a crib in our room for another couple months- horrible. Then we moved LO to his own room- pretty good, but lots of times he would end up in our bed after the early morning feeding.

LO really loves sleeping with us and if it was up to him we would still be co-bedding, but I just don't sleep well with him in the bed, so it's a no go now.

My son sleeps in a bassinet in our room at the moment, but as soon as all our visitors are (finally!) gone, we'll work on transitioning to his cot. He'll be almost 10 weeks by then.

We do occasionally have him in bed with us after his night feed, sleeping on my stomach, as I'm a pretty consistent back sleeper, but he has to be pretty fussy to get that!

I was against even having him in the same room as us, because hubs is a ridiculously light sleeper, but a solid 10 weeks worth of constant visitors staying with us in our 2 bedroom house kinda messed that plan up :)

I am so scared to cosleep and hope LO doesn't make me do it. I want him and need him to sleep but I feel like him sleeping in my bed would make DH & I more nervous because of the increased risks. I hope to just get away with doing the PnP for a few weeks and then get him out of our room entirely. We will see what LOs plans are!

We'll be using a co-sleeper attached to our bed during infancy, and when they are toddler age they will switch to a floor bed in our room. When they are ready to sleep in a room of their own, great, but I won't be pushing them into it earlier than they are comfortable with.

Sort of. She slept in our room in a bassinet until she was about five months old. There were times when she'd start the night in her bassinet but end up in our bed after a middle-of-the-night nursing session. Now she is in her own room, but still usually ends up in our bed to nurse. She prefers sleeping in her own crib though (I think she likes having room to stretch and move around) so she has a hard time falling asleep in our bed.

Swore I never would have her in bed with me. My Mom laughed at me and said "just you wait until you are sooo tired and she just wants to nurse. You'll be laying her next to you and sleeping while she nurses.". She was oh so right;) When she was really little, she would sleep on my chest in bed with me. At 2 months a friend gave us a rock n play where she FINALLY was able to sleep not on me. At 4 months she moved to the pack n play next to our bed and now she sleeps with me only if she won't easily go back to sleep after a night feeding (which is everynight). She sleeps next to me and the wall. I am hyperaware of where she is and am a still sleeper. My 300lb DH would not be able to sleep nect to her since he is a sound sleeper and tosses and turns all night.

I'm curious to see what we will do whenever we have our next child. We think we are going to have a bassinet or pack'n'play in our room. Since Hubby is out of town a lot for work, I wonder if I'll just be so tired that I'll co-sleep when he is gone.

I never planned on cosleeping either. In fact, it scared me before having DS.
I did the same as you, I nursed half-awake and it allowed me to get more sleep and DS would sleep better, too.
He's 9 months old now and sleeps in his crib until 4am, I nurse him and bring him to bed with me until I get up at 6am to get ready for work, then I move him to the crib. I love our time together at night, since I'm working full time.

I voted for two things because we used to cosleep, but don't anymore.

Your situation sounds nearly identical to mine!! DH and I took turns for 4 weeks holding him through the night, finally we took him into our bed at he learned how to side nurse around 6 weeks. It was great!! He slept with us until his sleep got really bad. At 3.5 months we transitioned him to his crib and it couldn't have been more perfect timing- his sleep got better. And mine did too!!

Haha...the phrase "family bed" cracks me up every time I hear it!

At this point, we plan on co-sleeping with baby at night for the first few months, as we want to encourage breastfeeding (and I don't want to get out of bed in the middle of the night for weeks on end!). We'll use a co-sleeper. Baby will nap in their own crib and other places. Once night feedings stop, we'll think about changing arrangements.

Hubby and I agreed we would never! At 5 mos dd sleeps part of each night in our bed, depending on how many wake ups she has. We like to keep her in her crib until at least 2-3amish so we get a stretch to ourselves, then when she wakes to feed, we pull her in with us. Oh well, it really does all change once they're here!

I think LO will be in a bassinet in our room for a few weeks or in the crib in his/her room if we put a futon in there like I'm hoping to. I'd prefer LO get used to his/her room and to not disturb DH and the dogs in te middle of the night. We have an obnoxious Schnoodle who barks at EVERYTHING in the middle of the night, especially me walking to/from the bathroom. So to avoid her barking as soon as LO falls asleep, I may doze in LO's room after she's woken up for a feed, at least for the first couple of weeks.

DH and I have also explored the bark collar option for the Schnoodle because she's AWFUL about barking.

For the most part we don't but there are a few occasions where I am just so tired I bring him into bed with us. Most of the time I would fall asleep in the recliner with him on the boppy and I would wake up to him nursing again. He is a pro at finding my nipple! Now we are sleep training so no more time in our bed unless its a nap on the weekend.

This is something I swore I'd never do either, but we do co-sleep for part of the night. LO was in a bassinnet and would mostly stay in there, but now that we've moved her into her crib, we do more co-sleeping. She'll go down in her crib and stay there quite a while. At some point, usually between 3-5am, she'll start to wake up but will fall back asleep if I hold her. So we'll go back to bed together for a couple more hours. This is not deep sleep for me, since she moves around somewhat and wants her binky, but it's better than no sleep! I was so terrified of rolling over on her, but I am so aware of her presence and am a back sleeper anyway, so it's perfect with her on my chest.

@FutureMrsMcK: your story sounds a lot like mine. Our babies are the same age and he would not let me put him down and woke up constantly. I bought the arms reach co sleeper in response, but often he ends up in the bed. We started the side nursing position as well at around 2-3 weeks once he had his latch down well (which we struggled with at first). I fall asleep nursing him and will wake up a couple hours later. I keep him in his sleeper when I can, but most nights he does spend a decent amoun t of time in the bed with us. He is a MUCH better sleeper now. I was anti-bed sharing prior to giving birth, but it's amazing how sleep deprivation changes your opinions on some things!
I do try to follow all the bed sharing safety recs.
