Basically they didn't believe that bacteria and viruses caused illness. It's sort of like the climate change deniers nowadays. Chiropractors really set themselves against modern medicine for awhile. The only PT's that I've met who refer to themselves as Doctor are terribly full of themselves. Typically I've observed that non MD allied health professionals (chiros, PTs, etc) who call themselves Doctor are really only selling themselves.
