No. I think of them as a medical care professional. I work with chiropractors and medical doctors on a regular basis and chiropractors do get their feathers ruffled if you don't refer to them as "Dr." So I go along with it but but actually consider them a doctor.

@Littlebit7: agree w/what you said.

I have a friend who is a chiropractor who refers to himself as a physician and doctor. It's misleading, in my opinion, because there are people who truly think he is an MD.

@2littlepumpkins: chiropractor s and some other groups, like Scientology, were against germ theory of disease. Basically they didn't believe that bacteria and viruses caused illness. It's sort of like the climate change deniers nowadays. Chiropractors really set themselves against modern medicine for awhile. There's been a more recent trend to incorporate them as an option for people bc there are certain pain issues that are helped by chiropractors but there's still some chiropractors that hold onto the very old school idea of back cracking is a cure all.

@FannyMae: yeah one of maybe three chiropractors I know is hugely anti vax with proof of memes and in my opinion also blindly pro-his-political-opinions (I will avoid specifics but I'm sure we all know the type..) so maybe I am a little biased but I don't put much weight in the education of a chiropractor...

@Mrs. Pen: I was thinking about this too. Being called a "Doctor" when working in the medical field gives the idea that the person is a medical doctor or the equivalent, even if this is not the case. False sense of security perhaps?

In a similar vein, surgeons here are referred to by Mr/Miss/Ms/Mrs rather than Dr which I always found funny.

Nope. I also don't think of my BIL as a doctor even though he calls himself Dr (with a phd in philosophy). My husband has a J.D. and isn't a "doctor," either! To me a doctor is an MD/DO/Podiatrist.

This thread highlights that I really think there needs to be a separate term for MEDICAL DOCTOR, and other doctorates. Because I do believe that obtaining a doctorate is a lot of work and worthy of high honor, so it'd be nice to have a title for them that is not easily confused with an MD.
At this point you'd have to specify "doctor of ____ (law, nursing, etc)

@peaches1038: Yep, ditto. I have my DPT but I never refer to myself as a Doctor. I could, but I don't. It is terribly confusing to patients. The only PT's that I've met who refer to themselves as Doctor are terribly full of themselves. Typically I've observed that non MD allied health professionals (chiros, PTs, etc) who call themselves Doctor are really only selling themselves. It can and is often used as a marketing tool.

Would I refer to them as doctor in a situation where it made sense? (I.E. receiving medical care from them, addressing a formal invitation) -- Yes.

Do I consider them (personally) to be the equivalent of a doctor? -- No.

It's weird, though, because I consider a psychologist to be a doctor and it's not like they went to med school.

@travellingbee: My coworker has her Ph.D. in English, so we'll call her "Doctor" for fun, but she laughs, she would never call herself Dr seriously. Working in the medical center it would probably cause some confusion, haha.

No. Not even by educational standards. Use of the title "doctor" implies that they possess medical knowledge and training far beyond what they have. There's a big difference between obtaining a doctorate and being a doctor.
