I love you girls! Actually told her I'm busy today and tomorrow hoping she'd get the hint, but she responded with coming over the following day.

I womaned-up and sent her a msg saying, sorry but she'll have to find some other luggage because I may need them just in case. And have a safe trip!

Thanks @jessiejo17!!!

I would be honest and say after some thought I've decided I'm not comfortable loaning out my luggage. No use trying to make up an excuse because if you lose her as a friend over this it doesn't sound to me like it would be such a huge loss.

I would just say "actually DH and I discussed it and we decided with the busy summer we have planned & with the baby that we will need the luggage for trips with the baby, sorry! Have a great trip."

She can't get mad as it is your items and if you aren't comfortable loaning it don't! And I think it is completely rude she hasn't contacted you in between, she's very much using you for your personal items.

Help! I need excuses! I got a txt today from her saying:

"Morning, how are you? Do you have time at 1:00 only 10 mins? I need to take a look at your luggage."

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and she didn't even bother to pretend to ask?! Lol! We haven't talked since the last time! So umm yeh ... I want to get out of this and kicking myself for not saying no in the first place. I'm horrible at saying no, but especially after her txt it definitely doesn't feel right to let this girl borrow anything if she doesn't even have the decency to small talk about the baby on the way.

I feel bad lying though. Should I just tell her the truth: I changed my mind? <--- As simple as that? I feel bad not giving an explanation (although I know I don't need to explain) but she IS the type of person to ask why!

I don't see it as personal but would reconsider loaning it based on your stated concerns (smoker and urine smell previously experienced in her presence). Also, if you don't feel she'd replace it/reimburse you for any damage it wouldn't be worth the risk (unless you were planning to replace it right away).

I don't see it as a "personal" item, but just a costly item that I wouldn't trust to lend to anyone beside a close friend or family member!

Just tell her you didn't remember having the conversation (hellooo... use the pregnant/napping excuse!) and leave it at that.

@Crumbs: Then I would definetely say sorry but you changed your mind...or blame it on your husband/mom/sister who borrowed it and hasn't returned it or broke it!

If it were me I would say that I pulled it out and the zipper was broken or it got ruined some how. My luggage always seems to get ruined on international flights, so I wouldn't chance it!

Normally I'd think it's fine to loan luggage, but not to a smoker. Plus, like others said luggage is expensive, and it goes through a lot of wear and tear during traveling. So I wouldn't want to loan it out.

I agree with Regberadaisy, I don't think it's personal, like my underwear (which I would not loan out to anyone), but it is expensive. I don't loan expensive things to acquaintances because you don't know if you'll get them back.

I don't consider it a "personal" item perse. But I agree with the other girls, luggage is not cheap. I'm not sure if I would lend it to a acquaintance especially for a international trip. Luggage almost always gets busted during int'l trips.

I think luggage is pretty personal. I'd only lend pieces of luggage to immediate family members or close friends.
You always risk teh chance of luggage getting damaged when checked..
I'd tell your friend sorry, but you can't lend it to her. I wouldn't want my luggage smelling like smoke and pee! :P

Luggage is personal! Some people spend good money on them, and people aren't always as careful and loving of things that aren't theres. For me, it depends on my relationship with them.

I guess if it was a good friend I wouldn't have a problem with it, but just an aquantiance I think that is a little strange. I would maybe tell her something came up and you will be needing your luggage.

Is she the type of person who would reimburse you in the event that the luggage gets lost? Or would it be your loss?

I just got the oddest call from someone I had gotten to know from a language course. I hesitate to call her a friend because it's always been one way. I've done a few things for her, but she only seems to call whenever she needs something.

I was napping so I was a little confused to how the conversation progressed. In the midst of apologizing for waking me up and asking about my pregnancy, she starts asking if I'm going anywhere in July and August. I'm due in early July, so there's no way I'm going anywhere.

She then proceeds to ask if she can use my luggage?! Huh? So she's taking a trip to her home country (it's one of the things that brought us together at first because she's also a foreigner) and apparently needs 2 pieces of check-in luggage. I was taken aback ... I think luggage is pretty personal. Plus she's a heavy smoker!! But in the heat of the moment I reluctantly agreed, but said I only have very large luggage (which is true) but they're the ones that I was planning to replace in a few years.

That got me thinking ... am I super stingy? I felt like she was asking to use my underwear or something =P Would you allow a non-family member/close friend to use your luggage?

I should add that there's a hygiene issue to it as well. The one time I rode in her car it smelled like a medley of cigarettes and pee (she has a toddler).
