Unfortunately, I am the messy one... And it's worse now that DD is here. Not gross messy, just a bit disheveled.

I said 7. He's not gross messy, just very cluttered messy. He doesn't know how to put clothes away after he wears them. They just end up in a pile in the corner. He is just the kind of person who doesn't put anything away. He uses a cup and it stays on the table where he finished drinking it. His socks will sit wherever he took them off for days if I don't pick them up. He piles his mail and laptop and phone and headphones and magazines all on top of each other on his nightstand and it'll stay that way until I organize. Stuff like that. I blame it on my mother in law (as I blame most things on her, lol). She never made him lift a finger at home and that has carried over tremendously to our marriage. He just doesn't have any feeling of responsibility to pick up after himself. It bothered me more when I WOH. Now that I SAH it makes me roll my eyes but I don't feel the rage I used to feel.

But he's very CLEAN. Which is weird.. Like if he drips coffee on th counter or floor he will definitely wipe it up and maybe even end up doing all the counters. But it's all reactive. He would never just wipe down the counters as part of daily routine. He has to actively make a mess and then he will clean it.

DH and I are both between 5-7. If there's a clean surface, we always find a way to clutter it up. I do clean once per week (with a little pickup through the week), which helps. We're both super sentimental too, which means we get rid of nothing.

He's definitely more neat than I am! I'd place him about a 4 and me a 6. I'm better at deep cleaning, whereas he's more likely to wipe down the counters just because. I tend to leave my shoes out and jackets on the couch, he hates clutter and puts it away immediately. However, he will eat crackers or candy and leave open bags out on the table, which drives me crazy.

I went for other because he's messier than me and tidier than me at the same time.... I like things to look pristine, so I'm always picking things up and ramming them in cupboards. As long as I can shut the door, I dont care where or how they are stuffed in. My husband likes things to be functional, so he frequently leaves things within easy reach and gets so mad with me for "playing cupboard jenga" as he calls it. He is forever getting hit on the head by tumbling tupperware! I get mad at him for dropping his dirty clothes on the floor, but he gets equally mad at me for stuffing laundry into the basket, where he cant see it needs doing and thus runs out of underpants (he does almost all the laundry - if I can fit it in the basket, I wont bother). He likes to leave paperwork lying about until such a time as he gets round to sorting and filing it, wheras I stuff everything in random drawers and then nobody can find anything. So while I would say he is messy, he would certainly say its me who is messier!

I chose 5 - he's pretty average. He does a decent job of picking up after himself. He has a couple chores he's kind of "claimed" as his that he does a good job keeping up with. Anything outside that realm though, he fails to see the mess. But I can't really complain too much. He also helps out as long as I ask.

He's a 2 - pretty good about cleaning up after himself, although he can be a bit lazy when he's tired (eg leaves his dinner dishes on the counter instead of putting them in the dishwasher). In general though, he loves a clean house and is very good about doing his fair share to keep it that way.

@yin: this is exactly how my husband is. It's like he's oblivious to clutter and prefers to let the dishes pile up all day and do them all at once. I guess since he rarely goes into super clean mode at home I do a decent job keeping up with the cleaning.

He will clean up if I ask him to though, and when he's focused on cleaning he does a really good job.

We both want to be neater, but we each are messy in different ways. I think he's generally more bothered by clutter, yet he doesn't often initiate picking things up, either. I'm bothered by dirty, but can't stay on top of the clutter to clean as often/thoroughly as I'd like.

I voted 7, but my husband is both a 2 and a 10 at the same time! There are some things he is absolutely fastidious about, and other things that he could go years and never clean. Examples: He is absolutely fastidious about floors and toilet bowls being clean, and will full on mop/clean weekly or sometimes daily. BUT, he will never ever notice a toilet seat mess, or a countertop or sink mess. I cannot fathom how his brain works on this: the kitchen floors will be spotless but there are piles of dishes with moldy food on them in the sink. The toilet bowl is sparkly clean, but the bottom of the toilet seat is a spattered mess.

UGH.
