Every one with my name (even celebrities) use the "a". To me, they are pronounced differently so I correct people if they use a "o". My last name is big, complicated, and Polish. It depends who it is, honestly. If it's a friend who has been consistently doing it, I might point it out. Or if I realize that someone misspelling it will cause me grief- like a work or important document. Sometimes I'm more passive about correcting people- like for example, my instructor was spelling my name wrong for the first month of this semester. It boggled my mind because she got my name straight from the registrar, where it is my legal name/correct spelling! I didn't correct her, but if she spelled it wrong at the hospital on the whiteboards, I'd go fix it. She caught on and has since been spelling it correctly. On another note: how much does it bother other people when strangers give you grief on how you spell your name?! I have had multiple people suggest I should change the spelling of my name. That is just so rude to me! Because of my life long battle of name grief- I take other people's names very seriously and I pride myself on knowing how to correctly spell friends' names. It's so personal, and such a little thing you can do. Thanks mom and dad. Unless it's an important legal document, I don't worry about it. My oldest is pretty simply spelled, but everyone tries to add their K's and Y's to it, I just say it's the traditional spelling. I feel bad for my second, my husband was hung up on an older spelling of the name, so we compromised- I got the name if we spelled it that way. My favorite is a personalized "Baby's 1st Christmas" ornament a family friend had personalized. I guess she didn't know what spelling my parents went with because it is the weirdest combination of ALL the spellings that I have ever seen!! The only time I was ever really mad was at the job I had in grad school. One of the women in the office kept calling me Wendy (not even remotely similar to my name). I would correct her every time, but in her mind I was Wendy. It made me mad because my e-mail alias was MYFIRSTNAME@....., yet I would still get emails that started with Wendy. Dude, you obviously know what my name is because you had to write out my email address. We have a very common boy's first name as our last. People have misspelled my name numerous times, and I don't correct them. They have spelled my name out as Yen and Jin.
