My son loves to pick out and give gifts, so I usually take him to a discount department store, like Marshalls or TJ Maxx and he picks out something for my parents, brother, aunt, dad, me, and usually himself too!

Then we package it all up in gift bags, and he writes the stickers.

I would like to but I think the whole family would just get toy trucks! I usually just let him give the gifts that I pick out, like my sister got some make-up for her birthday, my LO had nothing to do with the choice but "helped" me wrap it and proudly gave it to his aunt.

It never occurred to me to do this. I can't imagine what my 3 year old would even pick out, lol. If I asked him what should we buy Daddy, he'd probably say something goofy, like "a boo boo head" (his favorite phrase lately).

I haven't done this before, but we might this year even if it's just a little stocking stuffer thing. I will probably give her a set amount to spend per parent so she can practice money and number skills as well as generosity. DD loves presents- both getting and giving- so I think she would enjoy it!

I have DH something from DD last year and he thought I was crazy. To be fair she was only 2 months old.

Yes. Last year we had her pick out a gift for DH and me. Small stuff. I took her to the men's section at Target and choose one of the seasonal boxed gifts they have. She picked the tabletop pool table. I told DH I needed socks so she picked out socks for me.

We actually discussed this because we don't normally exchange gifts for the reason you mentioned- teach LO to be a giver. Our plan is to exchange gifts with each other and have LO also give us a gift.

We started this last year when DS was 3.5. I took him to the store to buy a Christmas present for DH and he picked it out all on his own. Will do the same this year. DH also takes him out and gets something for me.

I always get DH something "from" DD and have told him it is important for him to do the same in return. I agree with you that it helps teach the concept of giving. For now we pick it out, I think the next step will be presenting three options to DD and letting her decide, and eventually allowing her to pick completely. That's how my parents did it for me and it worked well.

I think if it is important to you, you just need to discuss it with your DH. I had to be pretty straight forward about or DH would never have picked up on it on his own.

For holidays/birthdays where you exchange gifts, do you have a separate gift from the kids? Like for Christmas, do you get a gift for your child to give to your spouse? I try to but my DH never does. I'd like to find a way to encourage him to because I think it is a nice way to get the kids involved in the giving side of the holidays and not just receiving.
