We follow an old German tradition in my family, Santa brings the tree on Christmas Eve along with all of the presents. It is so awesome to wake up to the tree and everything Christmas morning (trying to convince DH to keep up the tradition). Santa gifts are never wrapped so no extra work! He grew up SUPER poor. Like, their church would bring them presents (mostly clothing), because his mom couldn't afford anything. Some years, nothing would come on xmas morning. With that perspective, he is TOTALLY all about Santa, because to him, it was seriously magic. He wants our LO to have wonderful Christmases, because he simply didn't. I tend to be a curmudgeon when it comes to holidays, and his experience has taught me to really embrace all of the dorky seasonal traditions. Personally, I find one of the absolute best parts of childhood is magic and make believe. We incorporate elements of our faith and the North Pole in our Christmas traditions. I don't see why they can't coexist. </p> <p>As for Elf on a Shelf, I don't necessarily find the guy creepy, just don't feel he serves a very unique purpose. Cool, behave while I'm chilling on your mantle and you'll get a shitload of gifts. I like the concept of the "kindness elf" which is similar but prompts children to act out a good deed or festive activity (bake cookies for a neighbor, invite a playmate ice skating). To me, that's more fun and in line with our version of Christmas spirit. But to each their own, really. Don't really care how, when or if another family celebrates; doesn't effect my holiday a bit. Just don't tell my kid Santa is fake. None of my Jewish friends ever said anything about Santa being made up and they obviously didn't believe in him. I'm not a fan of the assumption that kids who aren't raised with Santa are the ones who are going to tell. I was actually told by an ex-Santa believer who figured it out. I see it like any other thing some people believe in but not others, like God. You teach your kid that some people believe and others don't and that its important to respect their beliefs. I've never believed in God but I've never told anyone that God is fake! </p>
