We don't need a bunch of toys and random stuff. As kids get older I want them to know they won't get like a bunch of really expensive toy gifts. Sure we could buy them 20 cheap toys now but that's hard to maintain when they are 10 years old and expect 20 expensive gifts. I hope it also makes them appreciate non toy gifts (fancy nice books, special shoes etc). </p> <p>However I do like the idea of maybe expanding on it a bit. Last year we did one big joint gift (swing set) in addition to the WNWR under the tree. I would also like to add an activity gift to the mix (which would only really ever fit in the want category which doesn't seem fair). This year we are giving our five year old a gift certificate to go on a ropes course/zip line at the zoo.</p> <p>And then a lot of the other random stuff goes in their stocking. I would rather just stick to buying things that I know she will be excited about. We were actually thinking we would stick to a strict 1-2 gifts at the time. Then, DH brought it up to me a couple weeks ago like it was the best idea ever. I circled back to how this year the gifts easily fit into the four categories and he was back to thinking it was dumb. Some years I am sure this will work between gifts under the tree and stocking stuffers. Some years it won't. If you don't do it, why not? </p> <p>I think we will stick with how we have been doing it with no set rules and just get some things they want, some things I think they could use, and of course books are always in there. They get a ton of books around the holidays. </p>
