@ShootingStar: @Adira: We always put new toothbrushes in their stockings! DS especially loves the electric ones!

@ShootingStar: Oh good, I'm not the only one! I've giving Thomas toothbrushes, which I know my kids like over the plain ones they get from the dentist. Plus it's cheap, so it's not like it's really taking away from toys. :D

@Mrs. Pickle: Exactly. I feel like my kids' needs are our responsibility to provide, so I'm not going to dress them up as Christmas presents. Also, my kids are too little to appreciate the "wear" category, so giving them clothes seems like a crappy gift for them.

@Adira: Haha, we're actually giving a toothbrush too - an electric Frozen-themed one as a stocking stuffer. It's sort of a need but I thought he'd really like it.

We do not do it. For the time being, I try to make it special for my son and make his wishes come true.

Nope, no interest. I personally don't consider "needs" to be gifts.

Kinda sorta.

I like that it limits to four main presents. We don't need a bunch of toys and random stuff. As kids get older I want them to know they won't get like a bunch of really expensive toy gifts. Sure we could buy them 20 cheap toys now but that's hard to maintain when they are 10 years old and expect 20 expensive gifts. I hope it also makes them appreciate non toy gifts (fancy nice books, special shoes etc).

However I do like the idea of maybe expanding on it a bit. Last year we did one big joint gift (swing set) in addition to the WNWR under the tree. I would also like to add an activity gift to the mix (which would only really ever fit in the want category which doesn't seem fair). This year we are giving our five year old a gift certificate to go on a ropes course/zip line at the zoo.

And then a lot of the other random stuff goes in their stocking. Toothpaste, socks, mittens, etc.

Nope. No interest at all. I love the fun/magic of Christmas. So her opening up new toothpaste that she needs doesn't fit with that. I would rather just stick to buying things that I know she will be excited about. Now if that is a nightgown or a book, then that is fine, but not sticking to 4 gifts in certain categories.

No. I brought this up to DH before having LO and he said it was stupid. We were actually thinking we would stick to a strict 1-2 gifts at the time. Then, DH brought it up to me a couple weeks ago like it was the best idea ever. I circled back to how this year the gifts easily fit into the four categories and he was back to thinking it was dumb. Some years I am sure this will work between gifts under the tree and stocking stuffers. Some years it won't. Our main thing is to give LO a few thoughtful gifts to open Christmas morning.

We don't. I love the fun of Christmas shopping for my kids and prefer to do it without rules or categories. I like the idea of it though.

We don't really do this. I do always get them stuff in all four categories, but it's mostly toys, haha. And we definitely do more than four gifts.

I don't do this specifically. We definitely get the kids more than 4 things but I do try to get them books, a toy or something they want, clothes/boots if they need them, and something I think they will like. So I guess we sort of do it, but not sticking to only 4 things.

Anyone NOT do it?

I've only heard of this on Hellobee, but even knowing about it for a few years now, we still haven't tried it out. Do you do this? If you do, do your kids just get the 4 things then? If you don't do it, why not?

I think we will stick with how we have been doing it with no set rules and just get some things they want, some things I think they could use, and of course books are always in there. They get a ton of books around the holidays.
