Basically $20 to anyone who comes to the door asking (I can't say no) and then sponsor anything our friends/family participate, and I usually donate to the charity requested when someone I know passes away. We prefer to control where our donations go, rather than just donating into a pot, like giving to our church. DH is atheist, but the girls and I attend the Lutheran Church. We also do donate there, just to help pay for what we use (i.e. the Pastor's time, electricity, heat, and whatnot). I think it is a great feeling to be able to further causes that you find important, and DH and I feel that it is something that we are obligated to do because we are fortunate enough to be able to. </p>
