@tororojo: very true. If you donate to a specific ARC disaster relief effort, any money that may be left cannot be used for other needs

I have donated to the Red Cross for specific disasters, but I read somewhere that's it's more beneficial to donate to their general fund instead...basically that way they can use it where the need is greatest instead of having to dedicate funds to a specific disaster that may or may not be the greatest current need. That applies to the RC specifically and it's been so long that I can't remember where I read it!

@mrsbells just curious, why do you think its worse to donate $?

We always donate to the Red Cross. If something happened close to where we lived, I'd donate to a local organization that I was familiar with. I love how motivated people get to do clothing drives, etc. from out of state, but I hate how much $ then goes towards shipping it, and that I don't know who actually gets stuff or how it is distributed. Coming from a nonprofit background I've heard plenty of (smaller scale or non-disaster) examples where a bunch of donations go to waste because they weren't necessarily needed in the first place, or there isn't a good distribution system in place.

Not saying that is what is happening at ALL in this instance and the Amazon registry is a great idea - just my experience and why we tend to donate $ instead of mailing socks or something similar to that.

I always donate money for places far away.

This time I purchased items off the Sandy registry.

I do donate to natural disasters, if they're far away I feel like it's the least I can do, since I can't actually be there to help.

Thankfully where I'm from we don't have much for natural disasters, but if we did I would be sure to actually go out and be there helping where it's needed. I think it's important for a healthy community.

I decided not to donate to the Red Cross for the same reasons. I usually donate with them or Doctors Without Borders if it's something out of state or the country. But for something that hit locally, like Hurricane Sandy, I prefer to work with local organizations where I can really see my donation at use.

@Mrs. Bee: I also purchased items from the Sandy registry.

I do donate money because its easier, but deep down inside I know its better to go out and buy things and take it there if I am close enough

Not money, but I've donated blankets, clothes, food, etc before. Where I'm from, we can have very severe flooding during the spring and summer, so I've helped sandbag before too.

I've donated to the Red Cross in the past for things like 9/11 and the Japanese tsunami, but since Hurricane Sandy hit so close to home, I've really seen firsthand how much faster and effective local efforts can be. My neighborhood has been incredible and tireless in its efforts to feed the people most affected by Hurricane Sandy, provide them shelter in their own homes, donate clothes, food, tools, time, transportation, etc. The Red Cross and FEMA is nowhere to be seen, and it's been so cold since the storm hit, and we have a big winter storm coming in today.

This is a clever idea a local church did:

http://www.amazon.com/registry/wedding/32TAA123PJR42

An Amazon wedding registry for supplies needed for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. I plan to buy a bunch of stuff today.

Do you donate money for natural disasters? Which organizations do you support?
