We always do a Toys for Tots collection at our business and then we donate toys to our church collection, too. When I was a kid my mom made a big deal out of me picking something nice to donate and it stuck with me.

I've always done Operation Christmas Child. You fill a shoebox (or one of the provided boxes) with small toys and other things for a child in a certain age group. They get sent to children in need around the world. It is a Christian organization though.

When I have my own children I plan to have them help choose a toy to donate to the salvation army or another organization. I remember doing this sometimes as a kid and I think it is important to teach children about the importance of giving to those in need (and the fact that not everyone is as fortunate as we are).

Growing up, our church always had this. They had printouts with profiles of one child, or all the children in the family, along with their age, gender, and clothing size, and special requests. We always chose the clothing ones over the toy ones, because that seemed more needy, I guess. We turned everything in unwrapped, and volunteers at the church made sure that it got to the correct family.

Yes! I think its so sad to think about a child not getting any gifts on Christmas. :(

There are usually “angel trees” at the mall and larger stores; and you can donate to a specific child that way. There are also usually local versions of the Toys for Tots program run through different organizations.

I get my department at work to sponsor 1-3 families each year, and we find our families through a local family violence homeless shelter. This year my husband and I are also working with our local shelter for homeless women and children to provide those kids some gifts and necessities. With both shelters, we speak with the house/shelter manager and go from there.

Another good place to look into is your local Ronald McDonald house; people often have to travel far from home to stay in a RMD home, and many people who stay there don’t have a lot of financial resources so it would be nice to give those families a little holiday cheer!

Our church does an Angel Tree every year, and before we started going there I always got an angel or 2 from the Salvation Army tree at the mall.

Usually we do. We do a Jingle Jog 5k every year and we bring the toys there and they give them to Salvation Army.

Do you donate any toys for the holidays? If so, to where and what do you usually donate? I'm thinking of donating to maybe toys for tots or the similar this year. I also wanted to do something where I can donate to a specific child or family, does anyone know how to go about that or have you done it, and how do you go about it?
