My SIL is annoyed with my grandma - Grandma keeps saying my nephew is "pretty as a girl." Really? You can't say "you're such a cute little boy"?

DD is almost always in something fairly girly. She does have some gender neutral items but the confusion is frustrating, even though I know people mean well. It's sort of like with assuming someone is pregnant, I'd NEVER do that! I also wouldn't ever say "oh HE is so cute" if I wasn't 100% sure he was a he, etc LOL

I plan on asking for gender neutral clothes for the shower. But I have seen babies where I was unsure of the gender, so I'm wondering if I want my baby to wear pink or blue so people know.

I have heard from my brother and a friend that once they told people the gender of their baby, they got a ton of clothes in that one color. My brother said they had to start buying gender neutral stuff because he was sick of getting blue clothes. Which is partly why I want to keep the gender a secret for a little while.

@artbee: Totally understand. I guess it just never struck me to be offended by something like, "Cute girl!" or "Handsome man!" Annoyed, definitely, but some people are just completely oblivious. Now if they were trying to tell me I wasn't dressing him "manly/boyish enough" then yeah, I definitely would be offended.

We dress our LO is all kinds of colors, I want to say that he has at least one one piece of clothing from every color of the rainbow. The styles of the clothes usually look more "boyish" to me, though.

@Rubies: Seriously, this is weird! How rude of your husband's friend! Most people are very appologetic after I tell them she's a she. I used to not bother saying anything, but now I always correct them. I also wouldn't mind if people asked what gender she was. I know that by dressing her in gray or yellow it's hard to tell.

@Themcmom: Did you take back the pink because you didn't like it? I have a friend who dressed her baby in all gender neutral clothes, she didn't let her wear any pink. And now that she's a little older, I think 3, and she's able to play with other little girls and see what she's wearing, she's all about pink. Last time I saw her she was in pink from head to toe, including a hot pink tutu. Not that I have anything against gender neutral clothes, actually most of my favorite of my LO's outfits are gender neutral. It's just funny how you try so hard to do something and then your LO grows up and has their own opinions. Guess that's life!

Mrs.Yoyo: I guess I like to correct strangers because I don't want them to think it's ok to say those things, to anyone. It can be offensive. And if I correct them, then maybe they'll think twice about making assumptions about the next baby they see.

@MrsBells: My LO wears pink often and is still called a boy, so you're very right. I think it's smart to buy gender neutral anyway because you never know if your next baby will be a boy or a girl, and then you just have to buy a lot more clothes. Most of my LO's clothes were gifts so I didn't really have a choice.

@Chopsuey119: I know! My LO has a blue shirt with hearts and butterflies on it. Really, would a boy wear that?

@Daniellemybelle: I actually think my LO has a pretty boyish face. I put a bow on her the other day just for funsies, and she looked awfully silly. Had to take it off. But she's still a girl and it does hurt a little when people don't think she is. I don't know why, it just does.

@Maysprout: My LO was once in a hot pink diaper and a pink frilly dress, and called a boy. People are just dumb sometimes. There's no excuses for that, at least in gender neutral clothes they have an excuse.

@lovelife: Too funny! My hubby likes to dress my LO crazy. He thinks she's cute when she doesn't match.

@Mrs.bee: I think that's so silly when people think she's a boy because of her short hair. She's a baby, it's not like we cut her hair like that!

She has a lot of super girly clothes but she has some that you'd probably think of as more boy clothes and then there's some a lot that could go either way. I don't care really if people know that she's a boy or a girl so I dress her in whatever. I just think she looks super cute in ruffles. I get confused though when she's in her pink and ruffles and people say my son is cute.

I'm not a parent yet (we need an acronym for those without LOs) so I gotta admit - I've always wondered, what is the big deal about knowing if your infant is a boy or a girl? Babies are pretty genderless in my mind for the first year. I guess I'm getting on my feminist high horse a bit, but we have our whole lives to be forced into gender norms... is it really necessary to make sure everyone knows whether your little baby has a P or a V?

I think it must be a Not A Parent thing. I'm sure when I have my own little boy or girl I be thinking, "Oh my gosh, how can you not see that she is the most gorgeous little girl ever? She could NEVER be a boy!" or vice versa.

I love girly clothes for my LO. I mean, I'm only going to be able to dress her for so long before she starts having an opinion about what she wears! All of her clothes (99%) have frills or some shade of pink on them.
People mistake her for a boy when she wears a light green sweat-set. :P It has "fairy princess" embroidered on the front of the hoodie though. HAH.

We are currently buying gender neutral and making effort to avoid pink even though we are having a girl. I do have a two pink outfits already but I only bought them cos they were on sale. I am not a big fan of pink myself and dont really care if people mistakenly call my baby a boy. Besides wearing pink doesnt guarantee that people wont make that mistake considering that somepeople seem to "cross dress" their babies.

I like gender-neutral stuff. Baby Y wears a lot of green, for instance. There was a green alphabet romper that he had when he was little, and everyone would think he was a girl. But then again, not too long ago, he was wearing head to toe blue (with airplanes) and he still had three people call him a girl that day. By that point, I didn't really care. People say I have a beautiful little girl, and I just smile and say "Thanks." If they're strangers, why bother with belaboring things, ya know?

I let people call Wombat whatever they want boy or girl even though she's a girl. It just doesn't matter to me if they know she's a girl and she's pretty much always in gender neutral clothes because that's what my husband and I bought for her. The only pink comes from gifts after she was born and most of that, we took back.

The thing is, I don't mind at all if people say/ask, "I'm sorry to ask, but is your baby a boy?" because sometimes it's hard to tell, right? I just don't like it when she's wearing something OBVIOUSLY girly and then call her a boy.

I've made the mistake and called a baby "him" or "her" and been wrong when the child is dressed in gender neutral clothing, sometimes you really can't tell and it's not meant in a malicious manner. A baby dressed in all gray (in my case) with a bowl haircut could really be a boy or a girl!

I don't wear pink as a girl, there's not one thing in my closet that is pink or light purple, come to think of it. My son doesn't have much gender neutral stuff anymore, once the babes are out of size 18-24 months, most stuff is more pronounced in being for boys or girls.

people thought charlie was a girl until he was over 1 even when he was wearing dark colors like navy blue. i think parents dress their kids in gender identifying clothes because they get sick of people thinking their boys are girls and vice versa.

i saved all of charlie's gender neutral clothes, but the reality is i'll prolly end up buying a bunch of girly stuff as she gets older. she's wearing his blue rompers at home, but when she goes out, i do dress her in pink so that people know she's a girl. esp since all girls look like boys when they're babies because of the short hair.... and babies have gender neutral faces!

we have some gender neutral things but most of the gifts we got were pink also.... lately I've been having fun dressing her crazy. (were at home so no one sees besides DH and I and it gives me something exciting/creative to do during the day.) Mostly I make her look like shes from the 80's. :) (onesie buttoned over her pants that don't match and some socks with her pants tucked in., topped with a fun sweatshirt.) I know its ridiculous! (but fun!)

Ditto over here. Sometimes people make really offensive comments to me, though. LO has a navy blue and white striped shirt with a yellow and white flower crocheted/applique on it and my friend's husband said, "You're not doing a good job making her look like a girl with that shirt." What the heck?

I pick clothes that are cute, regardless of colour. It's not my fault some people lack tact!

We got mainly pink clothes for my LO at her baby shower, so she's usually wearing pink. The few outfits we did buy are gender neutral, because while pink is my favorite color, I want my LO to know that other colors exist.

My hubby bought her a very cute shirt with a pig on it because I love pigs, and navy blue. I love dressing her in it because it brings out her beautiful blue eyes. I also bought some cute yellow onesies that a local artist made with puppy dogs on them because we're dog lovers.

But whenever she wears these she's always called a boy, him, etc. I try not to get upset about it because people really can't know that she's a girl, she has a tiny mohawk and she's dressed in yellow or blue. But it still irks me. Why is she automatically a boy just because she's in yellow? I wear yellow, I'm a girl.

Do you dress your LO in gender neutral clothes, or do you stick with the pinks and blues so people will know the gender and not annoy you?

Altough, even when she's in pink from head to toe people call her a boy. Oy.
