I only buy organic milk. I found that it tastes better than regular milk. I sent DH to the store and he accidentally bought regular milk. I could tell the difference right away.

Maybe you got a bad carton? It shouldn't taste spoiled.

@FarmWifeGina: that's awesome. I wish we had a cow!

We drink grass fed milk - it's a little pricier but I think it's worth it

I used to buy Horizons organic which is ultra pasteurized and didn't taste a difference since I always drank ultra pasteurized. A few months back I started buying organic frm local farm that's pasteurized at low heat for min time and not homogenized. Two weeks ago I had to buy horizons since I forgot to go to farmers market and the ultra pasteurized now tastes weird to me! Maybe the taste from process?

Definitely shouldn't taste spoiled, but as folks above have said, the different pasteurization process does give it a different flavor. Sort of a sweet flavor, because the high heat used caramelizes just a little of the sugar in it.

@septca: What brand? I was drinking a grass fed they had at whole foods, but I was getting whole, and it wasn't homogenized. So the fat wound up in chunks that I had to strain out, or heat it to melt them, neither of which was much fun.

I'd prefer raw milk, but it's illegal to sell it here. At some point I'm going to try to convince DH to do the thing where you buy a share in a cow in exchange for raw milk, but right now I still let milk go bad sometimes since I'm the only one drinking it, so not worth investing in.

We drink mostly Organic Valley or sometimes the Whole Foods 365 brand. The 365 brand is just regular pasteurized, not ultra, and Organic Valley comes both ways (the cartons you open the old-fashioned way to create the pour spout are regular, the ones with a built-in plastic spout are ultra-pasteurized). I think the ultra stuff tastes weird so I only buy it in a pinch.

I don't really drink milk because I have a mild dairy intolerance... but when I did buy it, or buy for DH, it's always organic. Now I buy almond milk, which is cheaper!

Yep, from our own cow. But we drink it raw and I have no idea what super pasteurized milk tastes like. WTH? I've never heard that organic milk is super pasteurized and I'm curious why they do this. That just seems weird to me.
I know that we can definitely taste when our cow gets into a patch of wormwood or something, but I'm pretty sure that any feed flavors are neutralized during the pasteurization process.
But "organic" is not synonymous with "grass-fed". A lot of organic cows are housed and fed the exact same way as conventional cows, just no hormones and the organic versions of those grains, silage, etc.

I think super pastuerized milk tastes odd, like a cooked taste, but not spoiled.

I buy local, less pastuerized milk because I love the taste so much more. I know I should be buying organic too, especially since we drink so much.....

Yes! Similar to what @PSW27, we don't have a LO so we don't go through milk that fast -- the best part of organic milk is that it lasts like 3 weeks longer.

I can't personally taste any kind of difference, but I never thought milk had much of a taste anyways.

mine never tastes spoiled! In fact, organic milk is usually super pasteurized so it lasts longer on the shelves...

It could be what the cows are eating that makes it taste different to you (grass versus corn)

I read the other day that if you only buy 1 organic thing it should be cows milk - I never buy organic since its too $$ for our budget but I figured ok, lets do organic cows milk.

I bought a local brand that was the cheapest at 3.99 for 1/2 gallon

Anyway - its tastes super weird! Almost like its spoiled but smells totally fine - is this normal???
