@rahlyrah: I am fine giving her sips later but probably not at 3?
:-) that is a cute idea about the kids beer for when she is older, too!

@Andrea: We used to bug our parents for sips when were younger, too. Our parents let us have a tiny sip to try it. Luckily, at the time, we both thought it was gross and never asked again! I did however make the occasional "kid's beer" when I was little (I would mix coke and sprite and the coloring would be similar).

Sure, a drink with dinner is fine in my book. However, DD is getting to the age where she questions everything so if she starts bugging us to have sips that will be a problem! I hope she doesn't start asking too much yet. She wanted a taste of my wine the other day but I said no and she moved on. Whew. :-)

I'm married to a Frenchman, so wine at dinner, whether it be at home our out, is a norm for us. DS, who is 2, often gets curious but we always tell him wine is not for children.

As others have said, I think it is very important to be a model of responsible drinking. In any case, DH and I rarely have more than 2 drinks at a time. We don't drink to get drunk, we drink to enjoy.

I have no problem with having a drink or two in front of kids. I'd be a little nervous about us ever both being too intoxicated to drive though, even if we were drinking at home and not planning to drive anywhere.

We don't drink, so we don't have to worry about this. But a lot of our friends do and I see them drink in front of their kids. My parents never drank (alone or with us) so I guess I can't see it from a child's perspective. I think as long as they aren't getting trashed and out of control or driving then it doesn't bother me much.

Yep! I think having LO see us drink responsible sets a good example. I grew up with parents that had a couple beers after work/with dinner. I didn't go crazy with drinking like friends in high school because of it.

I think that it is really important to model healthy alcohol consumption for children, so we drink in public the same as we do at home. For me, that means almost never with the very occasional cocktail that I don't finish. For my husband, that means one glass of beer or wine with dinner, maybe two if it's a weekend and we're out with friends and I'm not having any. I never drink to the point of feeling it. If I did, we'd make sure that one of us was totally sober at all times.

My mother was raised by drunks and had really understandable fear and hate for alcohol all my childhood. I grew up thinking it was really scary and bad and awful and with just a really unhealthy attitude about it. I still don't care for it personally, but I really support my husband in making it a healthy part of his life and modeling that for our children.

We don't drive, so there are no worries with drinking & driving. Because I'm breastfeeding it was sometimes tricky to drink but now that LO is nursing less, I will drink. I had a glass of Prosecco at her birthday party and the family-friendly cafe near me has a "Babes and Beer" happy hour every Friday. You don't have to bring your baby, but I love that I can! I wouldn't ever have more than 2 drinks while out with LO.

We do. We don't get drunk certainly but we have a couple glasses of wine when out; with or without LO. I think it's problematic to hide drinking from kids - but maybe that's because the only people I know who do this are all alcoholics. (drinking in secret is a big alcoholic behavior). Alcohol is something they will encounter, and will have to make decisions about. I hope seeing responsible drinking will create a good example of healthy behavior for LO. I have a relative who sneak-drinks; and it's weird to not see someone drink, but then to see someone drunk.

DH and I have experienced parents on both end of the drinking spectrum, and we hope to set a responsible example with our own drinking. If we are both out with our kids, yes, we will have one drink, but only if DH is driving, because my tolerance after one is way different than his.

I *never* saw my parents drink, whereas DH's parents are alcoholics. I think we will find a happy medium that shows alcohol is fine and enjoyable, as long as you are responsible with it!

I think drinking responsibly sets a good example. We plan on drinking around our kids--a beer or wine can certainly enhance the flavor foods. I don't want them to see it as a forbidden or taboo thing, or think that anyone who drinks is irresponsible.

aaaaabsolutely. But like many others, I will only have one drink because I'm still pumping breastmilk. And we're usually out and about long enough where driving will happen several hours after the last drink. We're not really in the drinking to get buzzed or drunk phase of our lives anymore.

I don't give it a second thought. Drinking alcohol (not excessively) is a part of our culture and our life. When we're not working, we're almost always with our kids. At weekend lunches or dinners out, my husband almost always has a beer, and I do sometimes as well. Even children's birthday parties!

PS Now I know there's a reason they have beer at Chuck E. Cheese LOL.

I think that drinking in front of children is alright, but being fall down drunk isn't ok. And if you are fall down drunk, you sure aren't driving! I have certainly had a drink with dinner before, I don't think there is something wrong with it! DH doesn't drink at all, so he always drives, but he always drives regardless.

@kiddosc: I agree. I think it's MORE responsible to show your kids what responsible drinking looks like than to forbid it in hopes that they'll just know. I feel like seeing it around all the time when I was a kid and seeing how my parents could have one beer or one glass of wine really helped me as a young adult to know my limit.
