I have dyed my hair a lot before myself (single color or those highlight kits only). I agree with the petroleum jelly to protect your skin, gloves, and plenty of towels you don't care to stain. I don't like to do it myself any more (so I rarely dye it) because I would always stain the walls! Just be very careful of not splashing when you apply! I think after baby arrives, I want to try those mousse foam kinds to avoid that!

Nope, I never have. I'm way too terrified to.

Yeah just a suggestion, I've had good luck with our local one here before! If you do it yourself, I just recommend using an old towel you don't care about and using vaseline around your hairline to help the dye from getting onto your skin.

@Bookworm: thanks, I think I am definitely going to do it! I can't justify the cost either!

Like @anonysquire mentioned, I wouldn't trust our beauty school here!

@littlecasita1122: Yikes the beauty school near my house does such a scary job lol. I don't think I would trust them with dye. They butchered my husbands hair and my nails all 4 times I've gone.

Yep, been dyeing my own hair since I was 16! My advice is to make sure you wear the gloves, sacrifice a cheap brush or comb so you can pull the color through, and have a friend/husband check you for missed spots! Oh, and use petroleum jelly on your ears and neck so the color doesnt stain those areas! Even though you will obviously get primo results at a salon, I never could justify the cost for all-over color, because I do a pretty good job!

I dye my own hair. But I don't go too crazy. I buy some of those cheap $3 revlon dyes at Walmart and follow the instructions. I usuall buy 4 packages for my hair. But I also dyed a 1inch by 4 inch strip down the middle of my hair purple and love it. I bleached it and then dyed it purple with some stuff from hot topic (scary store lol). I love dying my hair and considering when I go to my hairdresser it costs 200 I'd rather do it at home.

I used to always dye my own hair in high school and college. Then I treated myself and had it done at a salon once and I've been hooked ever since then. I find it's worth the money to have someone else do it for me, since I have really thick hair and it's such a hassle to make sure I didn't miss any spots. Plus I would always use a brown-reddish hue and it would fade to an orange-y color after a couple months. Now when I get it professionally done, it doesn't fade as bad so I can get away with only coloring it once every 3 months.

Is there a beauty school nearby that you could go to? They usually discount their prices since students are the ones doing most of the work but a teacher comes to check on them.

I have blonde highlights but I just want brown all over so I don't always have to get it touched up, it's too expensive! I really don't want to have to pay someone to put an all over color on! It seems easy. Do you dye your own hair or go to someone to do it? Any tips?
