To answer your question, yes, we regularly eat red meat. We prefer it, but eat also chicken and fish. We don't eat it everyday but I would say red meat is definitely eaten more frequently than other proteins in our house. If it was cheaper, we probably would eat more red meat.

ETA- the link you listed didn't list any links to the research. That's annoying. I hate when sites mention 'research' but don't cute the links. I did find the Harvard link. http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/Red-meat-and-colon-cancer.shtml

Anyway, I think anything in excess is bad. I think there is research that eating foods that are grilled have a potential to cause cancer.

We try no more than once per week, and probably generally have it maybe 2x/month? But then there are usually leftovers, so let's say average 1x/week. We really got into bison when we lived in Colorado and I prefer it when I can find it. Also love lamb. It's definitely a treat when we do have it! Mostly any recipe in which I would use ground beef I tend to go for ground turkey instead, and bison whenever possible (still red, but much leaner).

Not really. We never ate beef growing up - like, ever - except venison, and I'm not sure where that stacks up? I started eating it once in a while after college, and I enjoy a good burger or steak, but that's maybe twice a month or so. DH eats it more than I do, he wants steak and will cook it for himself maybe once a week. We eat a lot of chicken and fish.

@MrsBrewer: Yah I was in the same camp, but the article says that how cattle are raised and processed isn't the core issue... all beef apparently increases risk of inflammation and cancer.

We eat red meat all. the. time. Seriously. DH's family are cattle farmers, and we get great prices on grass fed, family raised beef. I feel confident that the quality of beef that we eat is the best that money can buy, since I know all the ins and outs of how they are raised, handled, fed, and processed.

I will not plan on cutting back out red meat intake at all.

I love it, but there's a history of GI cancer in our family, so we mostly avoid it. The research says that one small serving a week doesn't increase your chances of cancers, but we end up only having it once every few weeks.

We don't eat much red meat except for pork about once a week. We cut it out just as a way to try to eat healthier. I do a lot of turkey substitutes. I do turkey bacon, turkey sausage, and ground turkey as well. I think the turkey is better than chicken as a substitute. During the summer we will eat more red meat because of grilling.

I almost never eat beef because it makes me feel awful. I do eat quite a bit of venison, though. Not sure how that stacks up against beef in regards to how one's body reacts to it, but I know it's far healthier in a lot of regards. My husband would eat steak every day if you'd let him, though. His father has had like 3 heart attacks, so I rarely make it in the house. Neither of us eat much pork, though bacon is a staple. I prefer chicken over anything else.

I love red meat! But someone we live (and eat, and cook) with limits himself to 6 oz a week (and no processed meats like sausage, deli meat, etc) so it's cut down our consumption as well. I don't miss it that much, and it makes me appreciate the burger here and there so much more.

Digestive cancers are big in both our families so I'm very glad his new eating habits have rubbed off on us, even a little. We eat a whole lot more chicken, turkey, fish, and tofu than we did before!

I prefer it to other meat. I eat it about 3 days a week. We got a 1/4 beef from a farm down the road- it's a great option if you have the storage space. And the cost is great about $4.50 a lb broken down and wrapped.

Hardly ever, but mostly just because I don't like it, and it upsets my stomach when I do eat it. We eat lots of chicken, turkey & fish, and maybe beef once every 3-4 weeks, on average.

For a long time my MIL used to make us steak every time we came over for dinner because I was depriving her poor son of red meat, LOL. They have health problems now though, so they've also cut back on the red meat.

@mrbee: pretty much never. It is very inflammatory. I also read a study where men smelled better and were preferred (perceived as more attractive) when they didn't eat red meat. Not that that is a huge motivator, but interesting. I also personally find it expensive and unnecessary (as far as health and ecological impact). I know, blah blah :)

The China Study would definitely be worth reading. Eating a plant-diet was inspired by ethics and health. The science doesn't lie. With that said, I think there so so many other contributing factors ... Exercise, exposure to toxins, etc. I think it's about finding what makes you feel best and going from there. We're all on our own journey.
