It depends on the food. Hubby, on the other hand, will not eat anything expired or close to expiring. I have to assure him that it's okay and I"m not trying to feed him expired food. If he thinks there is a chance that it could be bad, he will feel sick to his stomach or something like that even if I ate the same food and I'm okay.

I always go by sight, smell and/or taste rather than the printed dates. I only use those as a guide, not a hard and fast rule. Sometimes things will spoil sooner or later than the date, and not all dates are expiration dates. Like others have mentioned, a lot are "best by" dates.

I usually toss it but sometimes I'll look online to see people's recommendations. If it's a day or two I'll still eat it. Wagon Sr. will eat it if it's like a week or two. Yuck.

I'm pre-pregnancy, so it depends on the product. Milk- I toss. Other things, I do the sniff test. I might be more picky when I'm pregnant.

@MamaMoose: I'm the same way. Pre-pregnancy, I'll go for it (unless it's milk or cheese). While pregnant, I have cleaned out our pantry and fridge multiple times of condiments and canned goods. :)

I'll let most things go past the date. Like @Grace said, the date on the packaging is usually just a "freshest by" or "sold by" date. With most things, if I'm not sure about it, I'll pour a bit out and give it the smell test. My mom (a food chemist) always taught me to never smell it in the container, especially for things like milk, because the crust around the top of the container can spoil and smell sour before the stuff actually in the container is spoiled.

The milk I buy has two different expiration dates. One from the manufacturer and another for NYC. Both are printed on the container and the NYC date is always sooner. So I'll let it go to the manufacturers expiration date as long as it doesn't smell foul. We only use milk in coffee so I probably buy it twice a month.

Yup! Expiry dates don't mean that they are bad after
that date, just that they are freshest before it. I go by smell and if I'm not sure, I take a tiny taste to see if it tastes off.
