@PurplePeony: oh yeah, we do that too. B loves The Little Engine That Could but it's so long and old fashioned that I basically summarize each page.

I do that, too! I did it once while reading to kindergarteners and they were furious, though!
"Miss BNB! That word ISN'T THERE!"

@erinbaderin: I love reading metered text to the kids!

If the meter doesn't quite work, I usually pick a word to extend... so in your example, I would lengthen "through" into "throo-oough." I find it easier than adding words, since I don't always remember which word I added last time!

I don't think I've noticed so much in her rhyming books, but I definitely edit books in general. For example, DD loves Little Critter but some of them are a little old for her -- I don't really want her learning about alien ray guns or running away quite yet. So I just replace it with something more acceptable to me that still kind of fits the pictures. And some Dr. Seuss books mysteriously "lose pages" when we don't have the time or patience to read the entire thing.

yes, I do it all the time! I can't believe they aren't written the way I say them haha, it seems much more natural.

Hahaha, yes all the time! This drives me nuts. I especially hate when the rhyming words DONT RHYME! Ugh, sometimes I hide those books.

When I'm reading books out loud, it makes me crazy when the metre doesn't work, and I find myself rewriting the lines to fix them. It just seems so sloppy! So for example tonight I was reading On the Night You Were Born and I came to this line:

It sailed through the farmland high on the breeze, over the ocean and through the trees

So I had to edit it to "through all the trees". My husband doesn't like it because he says it will make it harder for B to learn to read if he's following along but...come on, just have the same syllables in each verse!
