Something about that just irks me, and I used to feel really guilty saying no. But a couple of years ago, I made a New Year's Resolution to say yes every time I was asked for money (as long as I didn't feel like I was in danger), as a little social experiment of mine and I ended up donating way less than I thought and I felt really good about it too.</p> <p>The longer story is that when I was living in Dallas, I lived in a "transitional" neighborhood. And I felt like I was constantly being hit up for money--at the gas station people asking for gas money, bus stop, people hanging out in the 7-11 asking for my spare change, etc. I started getting really resentful of it and "hardened" I guess you could say. One day, outside the supermarket, this old lady said "excuse me, can you...?" And my whole body just tensed up and this anger bubbled up inside me, as I expected her to ask me for money. And then she very politely asked me to help her unhook a cart from another one so she could go inside.</p> <p>And then I just realized that....I was letting the situation make me hard and resentful, so I figured the best way to "take control" of that was to just start saying yes. Which didn't mean I had to give a LOT of money, but for 1 year after that I said yes every time they asked at the grocery store...I gave the homeless guys in front of the 7-11 my spare change, I gave a dollar when people asked for gas money.</p> <p>And at the end of the year, I realized I'd probably only given 30 dollars, and instead of being angry and resentful, I felt really *good* and more zen with the whole situation.
