It's very rare for me to not be doing something. I'm always either on the kindle or doing cross stitching or something, I like to have my hands going.

The last time I got my hair done (in July) the lady tried to insist that I read a magazine. She couldn't understand that I just wanted to sit there and do nothing!

Hmm, I've been running more lately. For the last five minutes when I go from running to brisk walking I'll take off my headphones and just walk in silence. I love it. It reminds me of when I used to take yoga... I think what I loved most about yoga was just listening to myself breathe!

All other moments in my life are very much filled with stimuli... mostly the kids!

The only time I feel really relaxed is on my commuting days. I'm in my car for 3-3.5 hours a day! Sometimes, I turn off the radio and just enjoy the quiet!

I try to meditate most weekdays, but I do use music so maybe that doesn't count. It helps me relax more though, I think. I've never been one to fall asleep the second my head hits the pillow so I always lay awake thinking for at least a half an hour at night. Also in the shower - I do some of my best thinking about everything or even nothing at all in the shower!

The only times when I have truly stimulus free time is the 5-10 minutes at bedtime right before I fall asleep in pitch darkness....and even then that only happens on evenings when I have sleep early so I don't turn the TV on.

And on rare occassions when I wake up before my alarm, I'll just lay in bed and enjoy the cozy covers.

@mrbee: Oh goodness I couldn't even say! I am usually zoning out thinking about the most random things. On my way to work I think about what is waiting for me on my desk then on the way home I'm usually thinking about what to make for dinner - but I also people watch as well which can be very interesting!

My commute to and from work is stimulus free. I don't like to be distracted since I switch trains and I'm only on each train for one stop. It's definitely not enough time to read a book and I like to be able to hear announcements people around me. Also sometimes I will walk home and that's 45 minutes without stimulus.

Once I get home though, the TV is usually on. Sometimes we'll turn it off and listen to Pandora while cooking dinner though which is nice.

When I get home from work with LO, I don't turn the TV on. 4-6pm is prime awake time, so we play (she's 4.5 months old). It's not necessarily "stimuls-free" but it is tech-free time.

I really struggle with finding stimulus free time but I guess I really should embrace the ability to just sit and do nothing while I don't have kids yet. Sometimes after work I just lay in bed for a few minutes before starting my "after work" stuff (cleaning, cooking, TV show catch-up!) It's kind of hard not to fall asleep though!

I force it upon myself with daily meditation. 5 minutes a day is all I need!

Probably my most stimulus-free time is when I am on the subway and my phone is out of batteries. I will eventually start thinking about random things, and let my thoughts drift... and sometimes I'll end up thinking about the most random things.

My thoughts do drift during the day, but rarely do they travel as far as they do when I am completely devoid of mental stimulation. I remember when Charlie was a baby, I would bottle feed him at night and I would sit in the dark and just think about my life and where it was going. It was actually a really magical experience.

I've started to block out times that I purposefully avoid stimulation and let my thoughts drift. What I've been learning is that my willpower is very weak. To truly avoid stimulation, I need to be in situations where I can't use any device. So sometimes I will leave my smartphone at home... or I was actually thinking of creating an app called Dumbphone, where if you turn it on you can't use your phone for an hour except for phone calls.

Do you ever experience stimulus-free time any more?
