Thanks everyone for your comment. I'm glad to hear that some of you are having similar feelings. It took me about 3 months to truly bond with my daughter and now at 1 year, i'm still surprised to have that 'disconnected' feeling. Maybe disconnected is the wrong word to use..maybe more like in awe or disbelief that this little human being came from me (and DH of course).

@lollipop: OMG YES. I thought I was insane and the only person who felt this way! It just feels so surreal, I think that's the best word for it? He doesn't look ANYTHING like me aside from his giant ears, so maybe that has something to do with it ;) I certainly haven't forgotten where he came from though, LOL

LO is 18 months and I do sometimes. Especially when my mom is around. She love love loves my mom and only wants her grandma if she's here. She'll push me away if I try to take her :( I know that her grandma spoils her and never says no to her and who wouldn't want that over someone who has to discipline and isn't high energy and fun 24/7..... but it still hurts that she doesn't love her mommy best.

I'm only 3 months pregnant so I guess I'm supposed to feel a little disconnected but it totally hasn't sunk in for me that I'm going to be a mum and have a little one of my own. People keep asking me if I'm excited and.... I'm just not, yet. Even when we saw the baby on the u/s screen and it was wriggling about, it was a bit like it was a movie they were playing - it's hard to think that that little human is inside me... and is my child.....

I wonder if the reality of being a mum is so big and overwhelming that our minds don't let us see it all at once?!

I don't know if disconnected is the word I would use, but thinking back to that moment my LO was born and they put her on my chest, my very first thought was "omg who are you?!" I felt I "knew" her from her squirms and kicks but at the same time she still felt like a little stranger. It took some time for me to feel like she was my daughter.

In the beginning YES. I think it's completely normal because it's just SO overwhelming to think you're now responsible for this person. I was just so busy the first few weeks feeding, changing, cleaning that it took me a while to just really absorb the fact that I was a mom now. And like chopsuey said, I still have tons of moments of disbelief that I have a baby.

The first year felt a little unreal. But, I didn't feel disconnected until he started throwing tantrums...I'd be lying if I said I don't get frustrated, hurt, impatient by the way he acts sometimes.

I don't think I ever feel disconnected, but I ALWAYS can't believe that I'm a mom and that they're mine.

My DD turned 1 just a week ago and i love her soo so much. However, there are times when i look at pictures of us and feel totally disconnected. I can't believe i have a daughter and this little baby is mine. I still get the occasional feeling that i'm just babysitting and her parents are going to come and pick her up soon. Does anyone else feel like this?
