yes, we said we weren't going to really buy anything until we had our first shower. we got so much stuff at my shower(not that i'm complaining!!!) that we literally only had to buy a breastpump(yay, fun! lol). for christmas i felt the same. my MIL and SIL went way overboard on DS and were like 'honestly, you don't have to buy him anything!' well how's that fun for me?

@Mrs. Pen: I still buy tons of clothes, so that he's got some at daycare in his cubby for accidents and some to get dirty in. Admittedly, I love Old Navy's baby clothes, inexpensive and cute since he's growing like crazy now!

@septemberlove: I think everyone's given you pretty great advice so far! I say go ahead and buy what you want!

I just had both of our showers this past weekend and actually I am really GLAD I bought stuff whenever I did! I was able to streamline my registry (even if I bought stuff myself, I'd mark it as purchased). Now even though I got a couple of duplicates, I won't have as much problem returning and can use store credit! Also, a lot of things I bought myself were things that people did NOT give at the showers (or maybe because I already checked them off on the registry). Things like: bottles, bottle sterilizers, dishwashing rack, anything for myself (nursing bras, postpartum, etc.), laundry stuff, baby-proofing stuff, feeding stuff....
Also, clothes-wise, I didn't register for ANYTHING and we did okay - we didn't get a ton of clothes, and I'd say even half of those are going back if they can! I'm picky!
Also, people didn't get us any big baby items really. We bought our own stroller, crib, dresser, etc. I had another stroller registered and it was untouched. We probably only had 3 big ticket items that were purchased by family or our very BFFs. So if you want/can get those for yourself, I'd think it's fine!

I know the feeling! We got so much clothes that will last us until our LO is 9 months. I've gotten her a few things but am looking forward to buying her clothes I like and think are cute. She has clothes I really don't like but dress her in because it would be a waste not to.

@ladyfingers: we bought our crib and dresser very early on (I was 8 weeks... DH was just super excited!) and we got our changing table, diaper bag, and several outfits, blankets, books, toys at Christmas. So we definitely have all the nursery furniture and the only real big items left are the car seat, stroller, pack n play, and swing.

Nah, we just bought what we wanted. We didn't buy a ton before the shower but that was just a personal decision. We actually bought our furniture early, around 20 weeks, and had three different family members offer to buy our crib in the third trimester. So we just had them buy other stuff we needed like the stroller :) We bought our car seat ourselves because I am anal and wanted to get it installed early, bought some outfits, books here and there -- I don't think there's any "shoulds" and if somebody is making you feel guilty for buying your own child things, that's their problem!

Yes! My mother went crazy thrift shopping for my daughter and I felt like I should buy anything. Then I kind of hated most of what she bought, so it was really lose-lose. I love shopping for her now.

@Andrea: I'd never get away with not having a shower. LO is my parents' first grandchild and the first great-grandson. They're incredibly excited and my mom's already set the date and picked out invitations.

I think that major gear purchases should be left until after the shower, but if you see something you love, go for it. Worst case scenario, you end up with two of the same thing, save your receipt and you can return one. There is something to be said about a mama feathering her nest for her little one. Buy the cute outift, indulge in the overpriced whatchamacallit and enjoy!

I didn't buy anything until after the showers for that reason, but I was happy to save my money.

I didn't have to buy lo any clothes, in fact she always has too much and she's 18 months old. All her clothes are gifted or hand me downs. But if you want to buy them, you should. You can always return what is gifted and spend that money on other things you need.

I got a ton of outfits at my showers, very little gear. I bought a lot of the gear in between showers. Even now at 5 months, we're buying a fair amount of things like play mat, baby gates, high chair, and baby proofing stuff because they weren't necessary in the beginning.

That's a good idea, to return to duplicates after the shower!

I'm not as concerned about having doubles of certain outfits as I am of just having way more than he could wear before moving up in sizes. And I know since SIL's son is only 5 months older than LO, we will get tons of hand-me-downs.

Yes! I have hardly bought her any clothes cause that is all people are buying for her. We are going to need to buy all the other stuff, since people aren't buying off the registry as much as we would like.

I will say everyone is buying newborn, 0-3, and 3-6, so at least I will be able to go buy 6-9 when we get to that point.

We still bought stuff for our LO before the shower, and just adjusted the registry accordingly. If you buy some books, it's not a big deal because there are a million books. If you want to buy a couple toys or outfits, the chances of someone else getting the same exact one is slim. To be safe, keep an envelope with all of your receipts. Trust me, you can never have enough diapers or wipes. We bought 12 packs of our own diapers and maybe 6 packs of wipes, and got a couple more at the shower and still are needing to buy more. Again, just keep all your receipts :)

I want to get baby gates, toys, clothes, books, diapers, wipes, etc. but I feel like I can't. I know we will have a shower or two so I feel like I need to wait to see what we still need after the shower(s).

Every time I do buy something, inevitably I hear that I need to quit because people will buy that stuff for LO (especially clothes). I've only bought a few outfits, mostly when JCPenney had the buttons you could win holiday certificates with. I spent maybe $7 on some cute onesies.

It's just frustrating to feel like I shouldn't be buying stuff for my baby. I'm thankful that we have loving families and friends who want to share in our joy and give us gifts, but I want the experience of picking out special things for my baby.
