Ohhhhh yes. I was a miserable, miserable person for the first several months of the newborn stage. Once we sleep trained things improved drastically, but it felt like it was such a long road to get there. I'm due in 3 weeks and I'm feeling the dread again. I'm just... really, really not my best self on limited sleep.

When D was still a newborn before we sleep trained, I had a couple of complete breakdowns to DH. I would be sobbing, begging him to let me sleep more, lol. I can laugh about it now, because it obviously wasn't DH keeping me up, it was the baby.

Absolutely! DD1 was an awful sleeper never improving from her newborn up every two hours with a marathon nursing session schedule. When the four month sleep regression hit and her every two hours turned into every 40 minutes to an hour wake ups I literally became depressed from not sleeping. I was afraid to leave the house because I didn't trust myself to be able to drive a car. It was horrible.

Um, I DID go crazy!!

DS did not sleep and was a HOWLING. SCREAMER. from the minute he was born. When they brought him to me for skin to skin he blew out my eardrum, his cries were so loud. They kicked him out of the nursery while we were in the hospital because his screaming woke the other babies.

He didn't sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time for weeks and weeks, got diagnosed with colic and reflux, and between weeks 8 and 10 he broke me. His witching "hour" went from 9pm to 1am at minimum every night. There was a 10 day jag where he simply did not sleep. He just screamed and screamed no matter what we did and I literally had a nervous breakdown. Even when DH tried to give me a break, I couldn't sleep because I was so anxious. My doctor put me on antidepressants for PPD/PPA because of it. He said I was borderline and probably just needed more sleep at my post partum appointment at 6 weeks but a month later DS' pediatrician and my OBGYN were like please God go on drugs you are going to lose it.

We did EVERYTHING - 5 S's, swaddling, white noise, Zantac, Prevacid, hypoallergenic formulas, probiotics, babywearing, cosleeping, holding him and bouncing for hours, inclining his crib, walking him, driving around in circles. Nothing. Worked.

At that point DH forced me to sleep train early because he was like DS is going to scream no matter what we do, so we might as well try to get him to learn to sleep because you are going to die. DH also wanted him on bottles and I became a combo-feeding pumping mom. DH took first and last feedings so I could get more sleep, DH took DS a lot on the weekends so I could sleep, and we hired my mom to come 3 days a week to help me out.

DS is almost 7 months now and is just a totally different baby. He's happy, naps and sleeps relatively well, and just so...pleasant. I really "hated" him for like the first 3 months of his life and could not fathom having to go through that again with another baby, but he's just so cute now! And he sleeps! And eats well!

@jedeve: yes! I totally understand. We are mostly past this stage now (take note mommas: you can make it through even if it sucks at the time!), but we have been debating about having a second LO and my DH said that he can't stand the sleeplessness again and I was like, WTF! I nursed and did almost all the MOTN wake-ups!

@pui: That was the worst and why I gave in and went back to feeding him at night. It was a quicker 1 or 2 wake ups then being up all night. On the bright side when he weaned he started to STTN on his own.

Yes.

I did end up going a little crazy after lo1 was born (would just sob randomly and intensely) I took anti depressants but I think more sleep would have helped.

Lo2 is in our room still, and not sleeping well. DH doesn't want to move him out though. Dh gives him his paci back, and acts like he is a freaking hero for having done so. Whereas I am actually up nursing for a lot longer than it takes to give a baby back a paci.

Sorry. I'm grumpy cause the kids got up at 5:45 and DH is asleep almost 3 hours later. Granted he let me sleep in yesterday, but I was up nursing all night! And he went back to sleep after I got up and then he took a nap.

If he complains about being tired, I might punch him!

Yes, especially when LO wakes himself up right after a MOTN feed by squirming and rubbing his eyes and then takes forever to go back to sleep (we have to rock him). After those sorts of nights I feel hungover the next day.

Ugh, yes. I can handle it when E is up twice a night (her baseline now at 5 mos) but the 3-5 wake-up nights make me just unable to function, especially if there's a few in a row. We swaddle weaned a couple of weeks ago and she was up.hourly for a week and I finally broke down crying and rocking on the kitchen floor. Thank god the Merlin suit could start that night! I'm on night two of the same pattern now because she's sick and can already feel myself getting stupid and clumsy.

Yes... In the process of trying to cut night feedings. It's so tempting just to feed LO because even though she was waking up every 2 hours at 7 months if age at least I got to mostly sleep inbetween. Now I'm up for hours every night trying to comfort a crying baby who is used to snacking constantly.

Absolutely!!

At 20 months, the number times E has slept through is still in single figures.... and I'm like a completely different person these days. I'm inpatient, moody, disorganised, clumsy.... and that's on a good (only 1 wake up) day. On the days when she was up 2, 3+ times in the night, I feel like I'm losing it. I have been known to cry all the way to work (over an hours drive) and by the time I arrive at work I cant remember what sparked me off.

Sleep deprivation is no joke!
