It is usually one of the better communication times for us as a family. We cover so much more than we can in the house with things to do and distractions hanging over our heads. It actually reminded me that when I was in my pre-teens and teen years, my dad and I used to go for walks after dinner a few times a week. We loved to go in the winter when it was snowing. I was a girly-girl and spent a lot of time with my friends at that age, and my mom and I liked to shop together and watch a few tv shows together but my dad and I didn't have anything that we really did together. I guess that's why we started the walks and we had such a good time! That was when I realized how much like my dad I really was, personality-wise. If I'm around I'll usually join them. I'm a whom so I don't get to take walks with LO during the day and try to make it a priority in the evening. We sometimes go for a walk on the beach at sunset, or early in the morning. Mostly LO regales me with explanations of how airplanes and rockets take off, complete with sound effects and hand motions--not quite a heart-to-heart, but he's a little younger than Charlie! :) Your evening sounds so wonderful. I live for moments like that! There seem to be so many of them in the toddler/preschooler phase. I love it! I've had a few "mom date's" with Ben and he really opens up too. He doesn't always tell the truth lol but I love his real conversations. Time with him at night is especially my favorite. We talk about the highs and lows of the day, what he wants to do tomorrow and usually end with telling a few stories which he LOVES. I have yet to take him on an evening walk without DH and DD though! We ended up walking to the drugstore and wow... it was one of the most amazing nights of my life! Charlie talked the entire way... he told me so many things and we talked about real people things. He talked 90% of the time, and we talked almost as peers... not as father and son. I honestly didn't know that he had so much on his mind!! Usually it's him and me and Bee and Olive all together... we do get 1 on 1 time, but it's usually at home. But somehow, getting that 1 on 1 time outside totally changed the dynamic and it ended up being one of the most special nights of my life! I'm going to make evening walks a priority in the future... I can't wait until our next walk together! Do you ever go on walks with your kids in the evening?
