I try never to go back on my word if I've said something, so in order to not get myself stuck, I offer a lot of choices "are you ready to go now, or two more minutes?" If I just say it's time to go, I don't let him negotiate. So I try not to back myself into a corner I don't want to be in. But it does happen.

We do not negotiate with toddlerists most of the time. He is quite the negotiator "just a lil bit longer", "5 more minutes", etc.

Hah, DH and I each have our weaknesses.
I will NOT negotiate with meals, and he will (and she totally knows this). He will not negotiate with impatience/boredom fits, and I definitely do.

I do not negotiate with my little guys. I used to and it just made things worse. What I say goes, period. We still get tantrums but we verbally recognize the emotion and move on. This momma doesn't have time or patience for negotiates. :silly:

She's allowed to give her thoughts and opinions and sometimes I adjust based on her thoughts. But for things that I say no to I try and stay firm.

Oh man I've tried not too but to keep my sanity I negotiate everything but physical violence, sometimes being almost 34 weeks pregnant I just need to do what is easiest.

We often joke we hope our daughter uses her smarts for good not evil...and my husband calls her a dictator...sigh.

haha, my pediatrician always reminds me not to negotiate with mini-terrorists! But, I do!

What really makes me laugh is while E doesn't tantrum often, when she does it's a full-on crying/screaming doozy. And she *always* heaves a big sigh at the end and says "well THAT was a big cry!" haha, cracks me up!

@mrbee: well, I'm glad I'm not the only parent who calls my kid that.

Yes, I've negotiated. She's a pretty good negotiator for being three. I've almost lost before. I had to shake my head and remember I was there to win LOL.

Alll the time. I try not to let it get to the point of mini-terrorism  Like if the kid wants to stay home a little later on a weekday, it is really not good for my work hours, but I feel for him and give in a little unless people are counting on me to be on time. It's horribly inconvenient, but not so unreasonable. My biggest help is getting him to understand what later means... most of the things I can't let him do are really fine, just at a different time :)

My mantra this year has been to cut way back on negotiating!! I was making too many exceptions, when we were late for school or what have you. Now I'm way stricter! When I say something, there's no negotiation.

This morning was a fiasco though. My no negotiation policy resulted in a 40-minute tantrum from my daughter. She is unstoppable when she tantrums! Made me want to just get back into bed and give up on the day. Finally she gave in and at long last I had my Pyrrhic victory.

Do you ever negotiate with your mini-terrorist?
