The job I just moved out of was a large, open area of cubicles, and for some reason, it was totally acceptable to make multiple personal phone calls a day. So, I heard one lady argue with her grown son about every single aspect of his life (seriously, I don't think he could scratch his ass without checking with her). He's being a total jackass and I have no idea why he would want anyone to overhear a family argument? </p> <p>At the last place I worked (cubicles) there was one woman who called her partner every day, at the same time, and loudly discussed her mother's medical issues. I knew whenever that woman's mother was dizzy, had diarrhea, etc. I also learned, through that one woman's phone calls, that she (now a lesbian with a live-in partner), was once a nun, left the convent, married and had kids, divorced, then met her partner. I literally NEVER spoke to this woman, but I felt like I knew her intimately!</p> <p>Whenever I need to make or take a personal phone call, I step out of the office for a a minute, or try to be discreet and then tell the person we can talk more later.</p> <p>Anyone else "know" their coworkers without really knowing them? </p>
