@Kemma: lol, i only smoked after L was in bed for the night and i had a shower after for DH's benefit because he didn't want me sleeping next to him with stinky hair.

@travelgirl1: i couldn't find anything about it on mother risk, but i read on kelly mom that nicotine is half gone from your body after 95 minutes. and the advice was similar to drinking - best to smoke immediately after you BF.

Anyway, I had 3 glasses of wine last night and 2 cigarettes, all AFTER i put L to bed, so i didn't nurse him for another 10 hours since having the cigarettes. I think i was safe! I did pump and that milk is in the fridge now, but i think i will dump it. I have an enormous freezer stash at the moment that we are barely touching, so it's not like i need it.

@PrincessBaby: i've read 3 - 6 months too and i'm also staying on the safe side. I started freezing milk in February and what i've been doing now is when i pump a bottle, i put it in the freezer and when i need to give a bottle, i am taking from the february stash. whereas before i always had a fresh bottle in the fridge and was also building a freezer stash by pumping a bottle every morning. but since our freezer stash was getting out of control, i decided to start rotating so i don't have to throw any away.

I also generally agree with the idea that if you are ok to drive, you are ok to BF. however, i wouldn't drive after 3 glasses of wine. they were really spread out and i didn't feel tipsy, but i also didn't want to save that milk. Up until last night, i haven't had more than 2 glasses wine one evening since L was born.

We are also going on vacation in 2 weeks to an all inclusive resort, so I will probably be drinking a little more there and be pumping and dumping a couple of times. Though i also hate pumping, so i'm pretty sure after a couple of nights, i will decide to just not drink much since it's not worth it!

@PrincessBaby: clearly it's up to you, but when I read 3-6 mo. I read 6 months as the point at which it should be dumped. We invested in a deep freezer to extend this amount of time.

@travelgirl1: @LaineysMom: I read 3-6 mos in several places, including the CDC so I was trying to be safe:). My oldest pumped milk at this point is from the first week of Jan so I just figured the sooner we get rid of it the better since we're basically at 4 mos now... Here is the CDC link:
http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/recommendations/handling_breastmilk.htm

@PrincessBaby: @travelgirl1: yeah, I'm pretty sure the CDC and lll say 6 months regular freezer and 1 year in a deep freezer.

I only dumped once, and that was after a huge dinner with wine pairings after which I was super engorged and after waiting forever and testing with those alcohol strips, it was still registering so I pumped enough off to be comfortable and dumped that.
In general, I am in the ok to drive, ok to nurse category.

@LaineysMom: I've read 3-6 months, and it's longer when it's in a deep freezer...We just have a side by side fridge/freezer and so I figured we might be on the shorter end of that estimate...

i haven't, simply because i can't bear to throw any milk away at this point. it is an inconvenience though as i have to schedule when i can drink (i wait the two hours).

Nope. But I have low supply and we supplement with formula. Every last drop I produce I try and make sure ends up in her body. I just havent smoked or drank at all. Would love a glass of wine someday again, but I'm not a huge drinker so I'm okay with waiting until I'm done breastfeeding, even if it s probably okay to have a little.

Yes.... If I have more than a glass or 2 of wine, I pump and dump. I don't feel bad about still having a good time with my husband and having a few drinks. I have a freezer stash of pumped milk that we actually need to get "rid of" since it's from January and so I don't really worry about it too much...

i've never pumped and dumped from drinking - an LC told me 2 drinks is ok, and combined with my laziness and dislike of pumping, i've never pumped & dumped.

but, i was on vacation where LO wasn't eating a lot because she was sick and i was getting engorged, and i didn't have any way to store it or bring it back, so i pumped and dumped it down the drain every time.

I've never pumped and dumped.. I'm too lazy. Haha. If I'm not going to use the milk then I'm not going to pump. I just try to wait until after my last pump before I have a drink, then I wait until the next morning to pump again. I also agree with others who say okay to drive, okay to bf.

Pumping and dumping after drinking won't metabolise the alcohol in your breastmilk any faster and the general consensus seems to be ok to drive, ok to breastfeed.

I'm not sure on the cigarettes although I imagine you'd want to change your clothes, wash your hands etc before handling baby to minimise their exposure to the second hand smoke.

I think the alcohol needs 2 hours to get out of your milk and after that you don't need to dump... Not sure about cigarettes though. I bet you could find out on the Mother Risk website, it's great for stuff like that!

Because you wanted to drink or have a cigarette? I did both those things this evening and so we gave L a bottle of expressed milk and now I'm pumping to compensate. I'm also planning to dump this milk. But wondering if its necessary? Like when does the alcohol and/or tobacco get into the milk? He STTN so I don't have to worry about BFing him again until tomorrow morning.

FYI. This is my first time doing this in a year and I'm not planning to make a habit of it. I just have an old friend visiting from OOT and he had cigs with him.
