I wanted to go marketing or psychology and was heavily discouraged. I'd been studying business administration at community college, planning to transfer after I graduated from high school (I did dual enrollment) and when I transferred, the accounting chair told me I'd never make money in marketing or psychology and that accounting would make tons of money and open doors. My family was and is working class...and we couldn't afford university tuition...only community college. I worked more than full time while in school and eventually just got too tired and was upset from seeing my friends making all of the standard college memories that I was missing out on. I dropped out and just worked full time.</p> <p>Now, I found a job I REALLY love and I'm climbing my way up the career ladder. Academia is really a tough career path. I'm quite successful in it right now, but I've had to make some pretty big sacrifices that have affected my family... especially in terms of where we live, and all of the moving we've done hasn't been great for my husband's career. If I could do it all over again I'd probably pick something else -- maybe medicine or some kind of consulting... or education research. I also would have liked to be a doctor. Unfortunately, I was hit with severe depression in my teens and I pretty much gave up. I didn't have the parental support, really. I got into university -but quit after my first year. Then.... I got a job. I've been working unsatisfying, mediocre jobs ever since. Granted, I worked my way up the career ladder and have got to the point where I am earning good money but I could have been so much more! </p> <p>Since getting well, I put myself through law qualifications part time (whilst working full time) but then I couldn't take the pay cut required to change careers and start at the bottom again. I have financial commitments now!
