All of the time. I've heard it's dangerous as well. I don't leave anything run, especially our dryer if I'm leaving the house though.

I don't ever since I read a YHL post about a house burning down because of a dryer. Super scary and I actually will stop the dryer if we go to bed before its done.

@Bao: @Andrea: @honeybear: Ditto on the crock pots! I've only been able to leave it on once when I was gone, and I was so nervous about I cut my lunch date short and convinced my BFF to come back to my house!

I don't make a habit of running appliances when I'm sleeping, but I have turned the dryer on right before bed, and sometimes the dishwasher is still running, but it's usually in the drying phase, and then shuts off.

I turn the dishwasher on right after dinner. It's done by the time we're asleep. Our place is so small that we wouldn't be able to sleep with it running, and yes, I do that to minimize the fire risk. I do the laundry while I'm home and awake for the same reasons. Also, I've seen a laundry machine break and start to flood the floor. Trust me, you want to be able to react to that quickly, too. (Especially if you live in a condo or apartment.)

@Andrea: Yes on crock pots! I could never understand why anyone thought it would be a good idea to leave a $20 (or even $50) appliance running without supervision. I mean, I can't be the only one who had an electric kettle in college (and got a stern talking-to about not leaving it on), right?

@Anagram: I agree that the chances aren't very high... it just never occurred to me that there was a chance at all. So now I'll be a bit more careful. It's not that big a deal for me to run the dishwasher an hour or so earlier before bedtime, so I'll try and do that from now on!

@regberadaisy: we have an LG washing machine and you can set a timer for when you want it to start. I always put a load of laundry in at bedtime and set the delay timer so the load starts about an hour before I get up. That way the wash cycle is done by the time I'm up and I just throw it in the dryer and fold it after breakfast. It is super convenient.

I run my dishwasher at night too! Bc that's when it's full and also bc it's loud. We run it as we head up for bed so we're usually not asleep for at least another hour or two but this makes me think we need to buy a new dishwasher that is quiet so we don't mind running it while we're downstairs.

My SIL's friend had this happen to her but I just figured it was a random freak accident...no one was home when the dishwasher was running but her house burned to the ground

It never occurred to me that the dishwasher could catch fire while running overnight. We usually start it after dinner and it's usually done before we go to bed, but we have run it right before we headed to bed. Never the washer, but we have turned the dryer on before going to bed. I don't ever leave the house with any of these appliances running in case they catch fire.... I guess I never thought how that could happen while I was sleeping. I'll be more careful to not run it while we're sleeping.

@mrbee:

well, non of this is accurate information, but cobbling together info from several different places, the stats are still very, very low.

I found this article that said there were 150,000 residential fires related to household appliances over a 2 year period from 2006-2008. Half of those were due to human error (or animals, or something else). So let's say 75,000 spontaneous appliance fires over 2 years, or an average of 37,500 fires a year.
http://pdrinlandempire.com/2012/04/will-your-dishwasher-start-a-house-fire/

If there are 114,800,000 households in the US and 78% have dishwashers (http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-03-22/will-more-britons-buy-dishwashers), then you have a 0.042% chance of it happening to you.

I generally run the dishwasher when I get home from work, but I often run it at night before heading of to bed, to my chances are probably even lower.

That's just not something that's going to keep me up at night. I have a much better chance of dying in a car wreck, from cancer, from a heart attack, or by someone else's firearm. =)

http://www.livescience.com/3780-odds-dying.html

We definitely run both while we sleep. In our last apartment the dishwasher was so loud we would only run it while we slept and we'd have to close the bedroom door. Now it's pretty quiet and we can run any of them during the day without it being disturbing so I suppose we really should, at least get in the habit before baby gets here and I get more paranoid.

I am not going to stop charging my phone at night though. I try not to do it all the time because I've heard it isn't good for the battery, but that's it.

My parents used to do this all the time, but we never do. It may be alarmist, but I don't want them running while I'm not there or asleep just in case of fire. Our house has aluminum wiring, so I'm extra careful.

I used to do this (you get electricity at a cheaper rate through the night here) but DH moans that his clothes smell musty if they sit in the machine for too long so I gave it up. Plus, I'm dreadful for forgetting to empty the load in the morning so I'd end up washing the clothes twice anyway...!

We charge our phones at night though..... scary stuff.

I usually run them both early enough so that it's done by the time we sleep. Not on purpose, though ... I didn't know that it was dangerous.

However, I'll definitely throw something in the washer/dryer right before I leave the house.

This is what I never understood about crock pots either. How can you leave something cooking all day while you're out of the house? I make sure that I am home!

Honestly, we are out of the house for 12 hours during the day. I would rather be home and wake up in the middle of the night to have it happen (flood, fire, etc) overnight then come home to it.
