In our apartment before this house, the smoke alarms were really sensitive. Any time I'd make bacon or cook anything at 400 degrees or higher in the oven, they'd set off. They were linked, too, so ALL the alarms would go off. All our neighbors had the same issue. Nearly every day we heard someone's alarm going off.

Now it never happens. This house is much more reasonable in that aspect!

@mrbee: Haha I kinda figured that when I saw the cast iron threads from the other day. When it works, the steaks definitely taste so good.

@AngelicOne: Agreed! This is way we always cook our steaks so we just take the smoke alarm down and cover it with pillows until we're done. :)

Yep, ours is super touchy. Just the blast of heat from opening the oven to take something out will set it off. I really need to move it across the kitchen to help keep that from happening!

What is it with apartment smoke detectors?? I swear ours will go off just from the oven (clean) being on at 300 and opening the door. We literally cannot cook anything without setting it off!

This is exactly why there is no smoke alarm in our kitchen. Just using the microwave would set it off! Don't worry, we are still safe - there are alarms in both bedrooms which are about 5 feet from the kitchen :)

I set ours off again today! I was searing a steak in a very hot pan, and even though the searing only lasted 30 seconds on each side (and the stove fan was on)... there was enough smoke to set off the alarm.

I think the issue is that the fan above the stove isn't very powerful, and also that our smoke detector is very sensitive. Also, I am still figuring out this cast iron pan a bit. Almost there, though!
