@Mrs. Jump Rope: That must have been quite the salt and pepper shaker! Do you think they got $100 worth of enjoyment out of it?

@Foodnerd81: That's a good point, she might be thinking she will just see what makes sense as time goes on and return the rest.

@Mae: I totally agree about the nice stuff I just always went with the logic of if Aunt so&so is going to spend $150 would I want a gravy boat or a set of sheets? My gripe with them is that is is soooo out of character it is odd.

@HLK208: I think that is part of it for me, I don't mind buying nice gifts but I wish people who normally shop at Walmart wouldn't decide that since I am footing the bill that only the finest crystal will do!

Oh also-- don't forget about completion discounts. I registered for more than I knew people would get us because afterwards (the wedding or post baby) you get 20% off to complete your registry. So if I wanted it, I registered even if I didn't think anyone would buy that thing for us.

Registries don't bother me. If people want nice stuff, that's fine with me. Before our wedding we had super crappy everything because for the few years previous I had just avoided buying anything, knowing that we'd register when we got married. I did try to have a variety of item prices on there, but I also didn't think less of someone if their gift looked like less because what I registered for was pricey. For example, I had several people get me us just 1 place setting each. That's fine! Now I have nice dishes I love and between all the guests we got 12 sets. Also there is always the option to give cash, which always fits and is always in style ;)

Yeah. I know exactly what you mean. I'm of the thought that even if someone else is paying, I want things to be a good value. Like, aunt use is going to spend $100 on me, whether that gets one salt shaker or a set of pans, I'd better be sure I really like the darn salt shaker.

In terms of loads if baby holders or whatever, I wonder if she is planning on returning a lot, either immediately, or once baby is here and they know what the baby likes.

Yeah...I've given a few registries a good eye roll...especially when the cheapest item is more expensive than anything I own lol.

Yes.

My adult cousin and his long time girlfriend, who lived together for years and were well established in their home, declared they wouldn't have a wedding registry. Instead, they opted for a honeymoon registry.

Then my mom got an invite to the bridal shower with a registry card enclosed. They registered for a lot of things, including a $100 salt and pepper shaker set. Nothing on their registry was under $75.

That earned an eye roll and wtf from me.

We have several weddings and baby showers to go to in the next few months. We love all of these people dearly and are thrilled to celebrate with them. But... a few of them have me shaking my head wondering what on earth they were thinking when they registered!

One couple is expecting their first child, between what they have already bought and what is on their registry they have no fewer than 9 baby container type devices (swing, bouncy seat, bumbo...), 4 changing tables as well as many other large limited use things. I know she is just nervous and trying to cover her bases but it is a lot of stuff for someone who has declared her house will not be overrun by baby stuff.

Another couple is super frugal but not entirely due to finances (they aren't by any means rich but they are not in a place where they need to be pinching pennies even though they do.) Their registry is filled with top of the line everything, $250 sheet sets, pricey china, expensive espresso machine etc. There are very few items under $100 and those that are look like crummy gifts. I understand wanting nice things but when they regularly use a $9 coffee maker it seems odd to all of a sudden decide they want a $200 one.

I feel like I keep running into this type of thing where people think since they aren't paying for it so they put less thought into what they will choose. Like I said, I am happy to help celebrate with them and I will choose a gift that works for our budget and off their registries but sometimes I can't help but shake my head and wonder what people were thinking!
