I don't believe in luck really, but I know what you mean. I've never experienced any major tragedies. Statistically speaking it seems something is bound to come my way sometime soon.

I think we go through ups and downs and whenever one of them goes on a long time I start to wonder when it will end.

Financially I get what some of you are saying (my parents were poor growing up and are now well off, an they worked very hard for that, so I do believe hard work is a huge factor) but I think at least some part of it is luck. Dh and I got out of college and relocated (fil was ill among other reasons) in 2010, and there weren't a lot of opportunities..I feel very lucky that we aren't struggling and we can afford, albeit not with fully funded college educations or whatever, our family. We also have very generous parents who have gifted us some major things (for example our tuitions!)

I think having an appreciation for the good luck times helps us have hope and get through the tougher times!

no, i am certainly grateful for things, but i don't consider myself very lucky. i'm actually quite unlucky, whenever there is an opportunity for something to go wrong, it generally does. it shocks me when things go smoothly! i might not be lucky in a lot of ways, but i'm grateful for what i do have and at peace with my situation.

Absolutely. I believe in luck. Some things all come down to dumb luck - there's no rhyme or reason.

DH and I think that we totally lucked out with DD. We're still trying to figure out how we'd gotten so lucky!

@winniebee: People tend to focus too much on the end result (and, more specifically, on their version of what they perceive the end result to be), and discount the never ending work and sacrifices that were made--and continue to be made--in order to achieve the end result. I also think that people naturally assume it's *happily ever after* once you have reached your goal . . . when in reality, it is just another phase of a long line of sacrifices, only (hopefully!) this go 'round, with better pay/benefits.

@Greentea: @Mae: You are both right - my husband and I are lucky to have been born with very supportive kind parents and I know that! I guess I think when people say you're lucky it feels like it diminishes what hard work we have put into our lives. Also, sure, my husband is lucky he had his parents to pay for school...but his father died very tragically and a lawsuit over the death is what paid his way through medical school. Is that lucky? I don't think so. I realize I have a doctor complex to a certain extent...but it's because I don't think most people understand how ridiculously hard my husband has worked and what he has sacrificed in his personal life to get to the point he is at. (And, for what it's worth, he is 33 and still hasn't gotten a "real" paycheck yet).

I don't really believe in luck. However, we are very fortunate, and have been blessed with some incredible opportunities. And at the same time, we have been through some hard times as well. I expect things to fluctuate.

I do believe that life goes through cycles of good and bad. I went through a particularly bad one in my late 20s, most of which I had no control over. No matter how hard you work for things and how much you plan and dream, sometimes unseen forces can rock everything that you know.

Yes I think this often. I have had a pretty easy life. I do think that a lot has to do with your perspective as others have said. But I have to say that in my life, everything really has worked out in the end even when things were a little rough in the middle. I've never really had to deal with a whole heck of a lot and it makes me worried that some day it will all come crashing in! Yikes!

I think we all go through good times/years and bad but a lot of it is attitude. I feel pretty lucky overall, like my life has worked out pretty well. But I could list a lot of negatives if I wanted to - husband laid off for 2 years right after we got married, infertility 2x, lost my father at 19, things like that. But aside from the infertility round two I feel like we're in a great place right now - have a healthy LO, financially in a good place, DH has a new job that gives us more financial freedom, found a house we love, etc.

I feel really fortunate with my life. We do pretty well financially, we have a wonderful little boy, and our marriage is one of the strongest I know. But life hasn't always been easy and I guess I figure that karmically, I've paid a lot dues so I'm not waiting for the other shoe to fall.

Oh my gosh, yes all the time! I grew up poor, no health insurance and at one point, my dad and I dumpster dived for food. We washed our clothes by hand and line dried (I hate line dried clothes--too crunchy).

I graduated from college and own a condo with my loving husband in a wonderful town. I HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE!! I go to the dentist twice a year, I receive wonderful prenatal care, I make enough to save up for 401K, I'm able to go out to eat at restaurants on a regular basis. We have our health **knock on wood**.

I'm terrified that something will happen and my children will have to grow up the way I did.

Our extended family is currently healthy, we're healthy, we are financially sound and have great prospects for the future in our finances. I'm definitely feeling very blessed.

I feel lucky sometimes and unlucky at others. But, for the most part I am a lucky lady :) But I never win anything lol.

But seriously, we are not well off but we can pay our bills, I have some health issues but nothing detrimental, we are pregnant with our first child and even though we have had some complications LO is looking healthy and active. I got into grad school when I had my doubts. DH is looking for a better job and isn't having good luck there, but at least he is currently employed and I have a job, too... even though I've been out for almost 2 months with the pregnancy complications. I take the good with the bad and just try to learn from it. We are healthy, happy and have each other.

Sorry for the novel, I think I needed to see this to kind of recenter myself. Thanks for the insightful question!

I don't really believe in luck/karma. However, I do sometimes feel like things are just way too good in my life. I think that is more an attitude thing though... some people don't have it too bad but they only focus on the negatives. Bad things have happened to me and those close to me, but I count my blessings.

@winniebee: I totally get where you're coming from. My husband and I often hear that we are lucky to be in the financial situation that we are, and we feel that it's not luck, it's hard work that got us where we are today. That doesn't mean we aren't grateful that we were put in a situation where our hard work paid off for us, it just means that we don't appreciate our work being marginalized to just "good luck".

I think this a lot, and sometimes can't really "enjoy" life when things are great because I start to get anxious about when the tide will turn :P I'm a nutjob.

@Mae: totally agree with you. Sometimes I feel like the only reason I was successful in life is because I have an amazing, supportive mom who valued education and her kids over everything else. Totally luck of the draw who I was born to, and if I hadn't been lucky enough to be born to her, there's no way I would have this life.

@Mae: I agree with you. Hard work is definitely involved. But we all don't begin life in the same spot. Some of us have supportive families who gave us a huge boost in life. Others had to find their own way. I can't stand when people who had everything aligned for them just choose not to take advantage of the opportunities they were given in life. The most impressive people are those who overcome their circumstances through hardwork and a little luck :goodluck:

@Mae: @winniebee: luck has a lot to do with it. What if you (heaven forbid) suffered a disability for example, let alone the reality that you were lucky enough to be born into a situation that supported you in meeting your goals if only by some financial force aiding you in your ability to attend school in the first place. To me saying luck doesn't play a part in finances is not very different than someone saying something along the lines of, "I'm not lucky in love, I work hard not to be divorced." While that may be true, the nature of the sentiment is inaccurate because there are many factors beyond control in finances, in relationships, in many things.

I understand feeling like you deserve it when you have worked hard and it has payed off for you, but there isn't necessarily a correlation. Lots of people work hard and are smart and have bad luck that does negatively effect them.

@Mae: totally agree!

@winniebee: Right. I mean I think it is (almost) always both. Very few people are very successful without any hard work. But I also think very few people are very successful without an element of luck. I think its just an issue that always stands out to me because I have some wealthy family members who love to spout off about how anyone who doesn't have money is lazy/etc and it's their own fault because anyone willing to work hard could be wealthy. I just don't think that is true, and I don't think lack of financial security is a character flaw (or always the symptom of a character flaw). Everyone is dealt a different set of cards and hard work is definitely necessary but I'm grateful that the cards I was dealt had some advantages that a lot of people don't have (even things as "simple" as having parents who really valued education and told me from the time I was a child I was going to college-- lots of people don't have that support!)
