I might take it a bit easier but for the most part yes I still work out through it. If it gets noticeably worse than I back off but usually I can tell bad pain that needs rest vs this will go away pain. I make sure to ice and stretch a lot though. Here are 2 stretches that should work pretty well, stretching for me helps more than anything for shin pain http://www.self.com/blogs/flash/2011/05/4-shin-splint-solutions-and-st.html . Def get some new shoes.

When I was training for my first half marathon I developed severe shin splints. This was even after getting properly fitted for running shoes. My doctor said never ever exercise through shin splints thinking they'll just go away. I would walk it off and then run again. If itmreally burt then I'd take one day off before resuming training. My doctor told me I was on my way to a stress fracture! For me I needed to limit running to 3 days a week. So, I switched training plans and finished my first half!

@autumnlove: If new more supportive shoes don't fix the problem, you should not work *through* the pain . . . it can be indicative of shin splints/ stress fractures that can only get better with (usually), better shoes, rest, ice, and stretches (for shin splints), or rest, ice, and stretches, and more rest (for stress fractures). Several years ago, I *worked through* my shin pain and wound up with stress fractures in both legs.

@runnerd: Good call re properly fitting running shoes -- they do wear out after a bit.

If its not too bad, I keep going and it gets better after a mile or two. Severe shin pain that doesn't get better and happens multiple days in a row usually means I need to take a few days off or buy new shoes

I get crazy cramps on my shin/calves but have found they go away after about two miles -- the first two miles are killer (but walking actually hurts more than running through it). I also have to remember to stay well hydrated. Also rolling it out has helped too (with a Stick Travel Stick or foam roller).

But obviously I'm not a doctor, so make sure you aren't doing real damage! Hope you feel better!
