@Mrs. Lion: Maybe it is a southern thing? Because my friend refers to me as "Ms. First Name" to her son. Which I'm not really used to, not being from around here (though it doesn't bother me, I just think it's funny. I sound so fancy that way! :-) )

At daycare, all the teachers are referred to as "Ms. firstname." That seems normal, but I've noticed adults all refer to them that way, too. Like not just to their kids but to each other. A mom talking to me, referring to the head teacher, will say, "Oh, Ms. ___ said xyz." For some reason that seems kind of weird to me...

All of M'a preschool teachers are Mrs last name. I prefer this. My husband teaches high school and some teachers have the kids call them by their first name. He's not comfortable with that and I don't think I'd be either.

All of the teachers at our school are Ms/Mr. First Name. Starting in Elementary they use Ms/Mr Last Name. It might be a southern thing though...We don't ever have the kids use Ms/Mr Last name with family friends. It is either just first name or Ms/Mr First Name.

We have our son refer to his daycare provider as Miss first name. They do the same at school, male teachers are Mr first name and female are Miss first name.
We would correct it if we heard otherwise.

Oops - I voted "no" incorrectly because the poll was worded opposite to the question in the title of the post.

I am NOT ok with a child calling adults by their first name only. My kids generally call teachers "Ms. Firstname" or "Mr. Firstname". This is also what they call new adults/adults we are not so close to, unless the adult wants to be addressed by their last name. We call family/close friends "Auntie Firstname" or "Uncle Firstname" - but that is probably cultural (DH is from a large Indian family).

In our new school, it's Mrs. Lastname/Mr. Firstname. That, I think, is generational. The first name teachers were mostly new grads/young moms. This recent batch are mostly grandmothers.

@FaithFertility: Huh, I don't see that as a rude remark at all, just a casual/jokey way to let you know you can be less formal with somebody. There's a French verb that basically gives you permission to use an informal rather than formal pronoun, that strikes me as the same idea.

I would be fine with it as long as he was ok with it. But he's the teacher. If he's wants to be called Mr. Timmy (or whatever) he should enforce it with the kids. We tend to be pretty casual though. I was on a playdate with DS and his best friend and the mom referred to her DH as Mr.____ in front of the kids which kept throwing me.

I voted no, although actually I guess I'd be fine with it if that's how the teacher had introduced himself. Right now he's in daycare and all the teachers are "Miss (first name)", which ends up getting carried over - his gymnastics teacher just introduced herself as Allison but I can't help referring to her as Miss Allison because we're so used to it.

Hm... I worked as a behavior specialist at a school and went by my first name. I did it for a particular reason, and all the kids were allowed to use my first name (while all teachers used Mrs./Mr.

But if it was a recent change, and kid-initiated, I'd probably have my child use Mr./Mrs.

ETA: I'd probably at least urge Mr. Timmy.
