I never feared or worried about death before but now I do after becoming a mom. I worry so much about not being able to watch my daughter grow or be here for her when she needs a mother's touch and love. The worry doesn't affect my quality of life but it is always on the back of my mind. What settles my worry the best is praying each night for another day to be with DD and that she is always surrounded by kind people throughout her life.

@DillonLion: YES. I've been doing this a lot lately and it's a sick feeling :bummed: I don't worry so much about death one day but I worry about my marriage falling apart. I don't know why. We're good but we've had lows in the past (especially after each baby) and I don't want it to get lower than those points. I worry that it could.

Yup, sometimes. It's the human condition--we all think about death and get a little disturbed by it. I'll never forget that when my dad died at age 57, my 80 year old grandmother went into a deep depression over it--for some reason, I thought that someone her age would be "used to" death by that age, but she kept saying she couldn't stop thinking about how one day, none of us will be here.

That sounds totally depressing, but it showed me that everyone goes through this. If it comes up occasionally and you are generally able to go on about life as usual, I think it's totally normal.

As others have said, mine was down to anxiety. It's now extremely rare that I feel this way, and I think it's down to my meds - also Lexapro.

If it is seriously affecting your life you should probably talk to someone about that. I think it crosses everyone's mind of course, but for me it is so clearly in the category of "can't do anything about it" that I don't ever dwell on it.

Yep. It's anxiety. I try not to think about it, but that's not really the best solution. I don't really have a solution

Same as @wheres_c: ! I had a ton of intrusive thoughts to the point where I couldn't cognitively manage them (& I have a master's in therapy so I know what I'm "supposed" to do). Lexapro helped immensely. I still worry and have thoughts like that but I'm able to shut them off, so to speak, without slipping into actual physical symptoms of despair.

Yeah if you figure this one out, let me know. I think a lot about this quote:

"Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy."

I don't believe in an afterlife so I pretty much just try to enjoy the crazy ride while it lasts.

My therapist taught me a trick. Allow yourself half an hour at the same time every day to worry. You're not allowed to worry any other time so if a worry crosses your mind you must write it down and promise to worry about it at X time - then push it from your mind. It works because it frees you from all-day worry but I also found that when you come to worry about your worry the moments gone!

I fall into this all the time. Anxiety meds have helped (honestly). I just kept falling into a dark place.

I frequently fall into times where I am so happy with where my life is, but filled with grief about the fact that this stage will end and we'll all get sick, old, and die. It is so heartbreaking. I try to work on my spirituality and find faith in an afterlife where we will be reunited, but my heart doesn't always feel soothed by it.

How do you deal with this if you don't have deep religious ties?

I try to retrain my thoughts and intentionally think about something else but it is a challenge for me.

Lately I've been trying to tell myself that it is just the natural order and to just accept it and move on to focusing on the good times now and ahead.

How do you deal with these types of thought patterns?
