I have a dog and she only eats dry food and treats only b/c cleaning her teeth costs $500 each time. Now that we are in Asia teeth cleaning is $84! Not kidding! But I will still stick with dry food and treats only b/c it's healthier for her and I hope she lives a long time. She will be 13 soon...

In the am our dog gets a wet/dry combo of vet wet food for his tummy issues, plus a probiotic powder.

In the pm he gets his dry food soaked in water, because he eats his food too fast and doesn't chew it (lol), so this slows him down a little (a little..!)

I struggle to get mine to eat enough on their dry food diet - but I stick to it because it's best for their teeth. I supplement with raw meat (bought frozen from the pet shop) about once a week and table scraps but we wont mention that!!!

We only feed dry food unless one of them is sick and we're trying to coax into eating. Our vet recommends dry food because it is better for their teeth and she says that pets who eat wet food can tend to not drink enough water, leading to kidney issues.

I've never fed my dog canned food...when she's very sick I'll give her rice with water or broth. I think I could only do non-dry food if I did a raw diet supplementing with raw bones.

@Mrs. Bee: we do pretty much what you're thinking of switching to -- our cat gets a scant 1/3 cup of a grain-free, premium dry food in the morning and 1/2 can of wet food (usually Wellness) for dinner. It seems to work well for us. He generally picks at the dry food throughout the day but is always primed for the good stuff in the evening :)

Our 10 yr old cat eats only dry food of only one specific kind and refuses all others. Although if she had her way she would eat pizza with ranch. Our 4 month old kitten still gets wet food once a day usually but is happy with anything and even likes to steal the dog food.

The dogs get dry food or very occasionally a home made mix - turkey, veggies, rice, beef broth. The cats like that too.

our cat eats both. i just figured out a schedule seems to work for him: he eats wet food (half a 3oz can) when he wakes me up, late morning he has dry food with his liquid supplements, then he has the same dry with supplements in the evening, then wet food again before i go to bed (half a 3oz can). he was waking me multiple time each night to eat, but if i can get to eat more during the day, he sleeps longer at night, the dry food seems to keep him full longer.

@rachiecakes: yah our cat gets gnarly tartar that we have to get removed regularly, so hoping the dry food will help with that.

right now she gets 1, 3 oz can a day, 1/3 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but she is always begging for more food. i think it will be easier to stop the begging with some dry food. trying to figure out a good combo for her health (we've been to the vet many a time for peeing issues and they ended up not being related to urinary tract infections) because she's not used to drinking as much water since she's been on 100% wet food for so long.

@Mrs. Bee: after $4K+ spent on cats with diet-related health issues, we feed them 1/3 can in the morning, 1/4 dry afternoon and 1/3 can in the evening. House cats are prone to kidney problems because of dry food and male cats can get urinary blockages because of it, but all wet diets are no good for their teeth.
We chose the Trader Joes because it contains no by-products and isn't expensive and Blue Buffalo dry because of its natural ingredients. BB is more expensive but not as pricey as prescription food.

After our cat had a horrible bout of anorexia 7 years ago, I tried pretty much every brand of food from the cheapest to the most expensive to get her eating again, and eventually switched her to 100% wet food. Before that she was on 100% dry. Some people believe that cats should not eat dry food at all and should only eat wet or raw food, as that is what they would eat in nature.

But I am trying to get her to lose weight and the wet food she is eating (wellness) is pretty rich. I've been unsuccessful in the past in trying to get her to switch wet food brands. So I am trying to reintroduce some dry food into her diet because she will eat less of it than wet food. She is almost 13 years old and very lazy.

If I can get her to like a super premium dry food, then i'd probably feed her 1/2 3 oz can of wet food, and then maybe 1/4 cup of dry food a day.

What ratio of wet/dry do you feed your pets?
